I just got my first one of these cards (Lefty O'Doul, natch) and I was wondering what the collectors of this board can tell me about the set. |

Super Rare, come in many different colors, and most of the cards known (if not all) came from the 1991 Sotheby's Copeland Collection Auction (lot #707) of 33 different cards (16 HOFers) and a flattened candy box. |

I believe they were issued in horizontal strips of some kind as you can see the other card on the beat up Judge card. |

Yours could just be a miscut. Besides, I read that the Copeland group was accompanied by a candy box and that they were inserts. |

Correct, they could have been inserts. I am not sure. I should have said "the way they were produced". I have never seen a strip I was just looking at the miscut. I also think there is a color I am missing too...but I forget which one. Just thought I would chime in with the little info I had. I think I have read more on these before...maybe in a Trader Speaks or something.... |

Thanks for posting. Seeing yours does beg another question. These look like they are very much hand cut in that yours and mine are all different sizes. I might go back to my strip theory...and then possibly put into a candy pack? However, if no one has ever found one in a candy pack then even that is pure speculation. Could they have been strips when issued? Enquiring minds want to know....and also I would rather talk about this card subject than the dreaded ebay, or animal cruelty (I detest..but not going there) or the myriad other things we have talked about lately. When we get back to cards I am much happier.....go figure... |

and uneven borders as issued, it is also possible that the kids who got them "improved" them |

I might go there with you on that hypothesis but every single one? What are the odds of every one seen so far (in this thread) having that done to it by a kid? It's certainly possible but I am not sure how likely...Maybe they were sent to Leader Novelty and they had people with very poor handcutting techniques cut them and put them in boxes? |

As far as I can tell, mine has machine-cut borders. It certainly looks cleaner and more symmetrical than anything I've done with a strip card. The closeness of the cards side to side (as shown by the miscut one) and the wide top and bottom borders may account for a lot of aesthetic trimming. |

Glen's Judge appears to have way wider side borders than Leon's. |

Many Leader Novelty cards that I know of, were cut-outs from the candy box. Maybe these are too. |

Glen sure has a collection of these. I believe If you look at his scan the card scans are of different sizes and were pasted together. The cards in real life are much similar in size than the scan indicates. |

Frank is correct - I put together different scans into one picture. The sizes are not nearly as different as what's pictured. |
