Just wondering if there have been any really amazing deals out there.. if you have one i would be curious as to your best T206 Purchase.. in regards to what you paid vs. what it was worth...

Here is mine..a lot of 168 ungraded cards.. with many HOFers and SLers... this lot came with a red hindu back and 3 blank back Slers.. it cost me 2500 but I had a $100 coupon emailed to me from EBAY at the time so it only cost me $2400.

Don't be jealous Matt, we sold our first 1914 Babe Ruth Baltimore News Schedule card for $1000 in 1991 and our 2nd for $8000 in 1994. I don't know how dad sleeps at night knowing he ripped those to guys off!!!!!

In the early 1970's I used to check the antique and book shops in downtown Seattle. One day I stopped by an antique furniture store and explained my interest. The owner stated he'd been in business for more than 20 years and had never had any cards (baseball or otherwise) but would keep my interest in mind if he should have occasion to get some.

Weeks later I checked back at the same store. The proprietor indicated he had recently purchased a box of old baseball cards. After looking them over, I inquired about the price. His response: two for a quarter.

Now the condition of the T206's was okay - mostly VG with some better, some worse and there were a few choice players in the lot. All told, there were nearly 500 cards in the box and while a majority were T206's with a few T205's and E cards, the best ones were the nearly 200 OBAKs in generally excellent to excellent-plus condition.

Not sure if it was an amazing purchase, but I was pleased. I recently bought a T206 Stovall PSA 6 Old Mill back for $177. The seller listed it as a PSA 5 by mistake. I waited all week for the auction to go poof, but it never did.

I thought that I was pushing the pace on my T206(520) set until you came along. I'm averaging about 10 a month, but I still have to applaud your effort. I'm not sure, but have you slayed the Monster? Congratulations if you have.

In eBays early years I once picked up a card listed as a T206 Joe Tinker. I won it and it turned out to be a T214 Tinker. Got it for a couple hundred.

The funny thing was the seller had no clue what it was, yet it was the exact same card pictured in Lew Lipset's Encyclopedia (16 years earlier) as the example picture for a T214 Victory card.

at antique store about 10 years ago. The owner had T206's for sale based on condition. One group for $20 each for lesser condition(poor to good) and others for $40 each for the better(VG/EX) range

In the $40 group...were 2 Broadleaf and 1 Lenox. Paid $100 for the 3 cards !!!

This fellow in Virginia is selling T206 with ads in SCD. This is around 1986, 87 or so as I recall. So I call him and in the conversation he says "why don't I just send you a few on approval". I give him my address and about a week later a big box arrives with a binder of over 700 T206 cards. So (after I pick myself up off the floor) I calls him and asks what he wants for them. He says "what you got?". I tell him I have a fairly nice 53 Bowman Color set and we made the deal. Don't know who made out better but I was happy, he was happy, and I made great strides towards completing the Monster.

About a year or so ago on ebay, I took a chance on a red Cobb that was being sold by a non-dealer. He had good feedback (but not much of it) and the scans weren't the greatest but the card looked nice and he said it was crease-free and wrinkle-free. If memory serves, his starting price was around $800 and if the scans could be believed, that was a more-than-fair price. It didn't sell, so I offered him $700 and he said he'd consider it. I asked if he had any others and he sent me scans of about 20 other T206s, including a red Chance and another Hall-of-Famer I'm forgetting, plus a couple other issues I didn't know much about. Again, he said many were crease-free.
So I offered $1500 for everything, and he accepted. I sweated that one out waiting for the cards, but they arrived within a couple of days.

the Cobb ended up a PSA 4.
The Chance is a PSA 5
lots of others got 4s and 5s. And there were two or three 6's in the lot, included a Wildfire Schulte with an Old Mill back. Really a gorgeous card. Now one of my favorites.

I sold the ones I don't collect for a couple hundred dollars. So in the end, I figure I paid less than half what I would have shelled out on the open market.

When I started in 1971, I was able to buy a card of every hall of famer except of course Wagner and Plank) for less than $3.50 per card. Conditions ranged from good to excellent.

Back in the mid 80's I went to a flea market every week. A new dealer showed up with about 300 T206 and T205 and a few caramels. They were in a case and I asked how much they were. $2.00 each he said. I asked to see them. WOW. Cobb red, Cobb Green, Cobb bat off. 2 Mattys, and a whole bunch of other HOF'S. Bought all the HOF's and odd backs inc a T205 Cobb. What a dope! I should have bought them all.

Steve....that's a great story....700+..T206's, an amazing deal. You definitely won out on that deal, although back then it was
considered a "wash".

This was somewhat typical of the "wheeling-dealing" during the early to mid-1980's....as, 1950's and '60s cards were deemed
more valuable than early 20th Century T-cards. Heck, in 1982, you could trade a Pete Rose rookie for a dozen T206 Cobb's.
Those were really great times in this hobby, and most present day collectors find such stories unbelievable and bordering on
the surreal.

My T206 story is similar to Mark L's -- same era, HOFers and stars, same prices and condition(s). What I'm still happy I did was buy a group of approximately 40 total beater E90-1s for about $10. HOFers, stars, and toughies such as Upp. There was an E-93 beater Wagner in the group too.

1972----I bought 1100 T205's and T206's (plus a few birds, military officers, etc.) and had to force $20 on the owner. He got them as a kid in NYC when they were new--he just wanted to find someone who was interested in them.

Pardon my ignorance as I am a novice T206 collector but what is the significance of the Piedmont Factory 42?

edited to add:
I had to look through my humble collection of 206's to see if I had any Factory 42's and sure enough I do. I have a Pfeister throwing with Piedmont 42 back. The card is in P-F condition with a crease and a speck of paper loss on the back. I bought it for $12 in the last year or so and didn't know there was any significance to this particular back. How much does this back add to the value? Not that I want to sell it, but might trade it for cards I need.

This is part of why I love collecting these cards so much. I always learn new and intersting little nuances of this set. Fun hobby, isn't it.

Anyway, I guess that would be my best buy.

....the below signed T206 card of "Wahoo" Sam Crawford, which I bought in a lot of 9 signed T206 cards for $2,700, is now easily my best buy when it comes to T206 -- signed or otherwise.



I allocated about $500 for it, which I thought was a bit high at the time, given what signed T206 cards of Marquard were going for on ebay at the time. Though Marquard did outlive Crawford by a dozen years, Crawford was known to have signed a lot prior to his death -- including several pre-war cards.

I guess mine would be my first major purchase of T206's, the bulk of my T206 collection came in a find and purchase I had as a kid for about $1500 about 1400-1500+ or so T206's with a few hundred mixed T205's and T207's so I guess I'm in about a buck a piece at this point, what's it worth your guess is as good as mine.

Barry offered me $2 bucks a card doubling my investment and Mike Sarno is in at $4 bucks a card...so in talking to Jeff he and I decided I can't really except any less than $5 a card today...Barry thinks $5 a card is highway robbery!

I was in San Diego on business. As is my habit when I have free time, I was scouting antique shops and baseball related shops. I was not into collecting "vintage" yet. I ended up buying a number of things and in the process of negotiating, had him throw in one of the small cards I saw in the corner of his case. He must have been desperate to make a sale and agreed.

The card looked old and was a portrait of this reddish haired ball player. I had no clue what the card was or which player.....

It was my first T card - a Johnson Portrait. And yes, the throw in is worth more than everything else I bought.

LOL I did almost the same thing for weeks I thought I had made a mistake for trading 3 Billy Ripken (FF) cards for a Matty dark cap.
