Hello, New To Board

Hello all,

I am new to the boards but have followed from time to time...just the controversial stuff...as it is.

I collect mostly modern and therefore will likely be of little use here, but hello anyway.

I do buy a lot of graded (either of the big 3 but prefer PSA due to the registry) and have collected Steve Young cards/items forever now it seems.

I did not know there was a post-1980 section. Thats a little closer to my speed.

I enjoy looking at images of the old cards and once I get the 80's Topps Football and Baseball done in PSA 9 and 10 (you can laugh now) I will take on the pre-war. (Maybe not but it sounds good.)

Hi Mark, and welcome.

And there's nothing to laugh about with 1980s football cards. They're just as important a part of this hobby as anything else. If we're collecting for the love of the hobby, who cares what the specific items are? As long as you love 'em, that's all that matters.

Agree with Al. A lot of hobby vets like to bash the newer stuff, but in the end all they sound like are a bunch of grumpy old men. Collect what you like and make no apologies about it. I remember in the 1980s when dealers would carry old stuff, current issues and everything in between. I'm grateful for 1980's baseball cards, they helped me fall in love with the hobby as a youth.

Welcome aboard. I have only been into pre-war for just under a year. Before that, I collected modern for 17 years, mainly Ken Griffey Jr. I still have some modern cards in my collection, and also do a lot with prospect cards from bowman chrome and bowman draft. I have just gotten bored with modern over the past year or so, and refocused my purchases on pre-war.

Hi Mark, welcome to the board. I was glad to read that you collect modern. Less bidding competition, just joking. Every now & then I also buy cards from the 70's. Those were the years that I collected when I was a boy. I still have those cards & sometimes I replace them with a nicer version. If there is anything that I can help you with, let me know.

Hi Mark,

A lot of people here at one time collected modern, and many still do. But it seems that pre-war gets a hook into people and they start dabbling, then get a little serious, and the next thing you know it's a full-blown addiction! hahahaa. So get ready and keep your checkbook within reach.

One of the better things about sport cards is the ability to collect so many different (focused) collections. The worst thing that could ever happen is that we all tried to collect the same 2-3 cards out of each set (which sounds a lot like collecting in the late 80's).

I started (seriously)collecting around 1985-1986, although like most things sold that collection years ago. I was really into watching baseball around then, and living in Kansas while the Royals were still a good team likely helped.

I recall when that kid McGwire was hitting all those HR's in 1987. I think when he was up to around 25, all but his 1985 Topps was a common and I think it was a quarter. I can't remember summer 1987 Beckett prices well now, but I was able to go all around town and buy almost every single McGwire card. Boy did I appear to be the genius when the next guide came out.

I remember the pine tar incident, the Bill Bunker error, how unstoppable Dr. K was, the earthquake before the world series game in Oakland, that Pete Rose was Mr. Baseball and that nobody swung like Bo Jackson.

In the 90s my interest switched to football and, along with a small circle of friends, we begin buying football cards.

Flash forward what seems like a second lifetime of chasing meteorites, writing for magazines and journals, attending trade shows, traveling the world and creating a log of stories I could tell, I find myself semi-retired and once again playing with sport cards.

Due to cheap autograph shows of the 80's and early 90's I met Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and I could go on and on. But my interest is more in the players I routed for, not those my father or grandfather routed for. No offense Mick (or Mick collectors). In fact, I owe Mick one. I was once "charmed" by a female Yankee fan because I knew the Billy Martin Shot a Cow story.

Anyway, I understand many here see modern cards as a waste of money. I also think that 99% of the people in the world would see spending over $1000 on a card as a waste of money. But you will never see me question another's purchase. After all, I once purchased the side of a house hit by a meteorite and on another occasion, a space rocket/capsule that had exploded upon liftoff.

Even though I asked you to stop nagging on the situation with Matt in another thread just now I do welcome you to our board. It's a great place to learn about pre-war cards and we even have a memorabilia forum and a post-war sportscard side of the forum too. I will help you anyway I can. I want everyone to get along in a friendly fashion and feel comfortable posting while not worrying about being ridiculed when doing so. You will see some small arguments and bickering but we really try to keep it to a minimum. Take care and enjoy....and most of all welcome to Net54.....

Thanks for your note Leon. I do think your e-mail was a little strong in the sense that I stop nagging, which almost sounds like I have been nagging Matt.(It was friendly worded though). I have not been a part of these discussions here and pretty much avoid it over the CU board. I did post over there this morning and if you check I got onto Pete about continually confronting Matt. My response to Matt on these boards was because of his generalization, which included me as I am a CU board poster. These are your boards and I will not mention Matt or the Ruth card or like again on these boards. Perhaps you could ask Matt not to make generalized statements about CU posters as that is what spawned my response.

I think that is a fair request but I usually take generalizations with a grain of salt. When the generalations get more specific then they have more meat to them, imo. I have seen this board trashed a thousand times. No matter what you do you will never make everyone happy. Take care now...
