Mastro 0% on PSA Cards Valued Over $1000 - Why?

0% on Consignment - I'm Just wondering if anybody has some real good insight to "WHY" Mastro would do this! Now, or at anytime!? I don't want to speculate at all, I'll just it back and learn from those who Know Better!

some of their past few auctions have been weak, and they are now just being more open about about some of the deals many were getting in the past. They can't afford to stick the consignor with 15% and the buyer with 20% (or is it 17.5%?)...in certain market conditions, it works, but not for the past 6-9 months...

0% only means the seller receives the full hammer price. Mastro Auctions still gets the 20% buyer's premium. It's not a charity event.

Pretty much everybody will give you 0% on high dollar cards, all that you have to do is ask.

I have heard that some of the other auction houses are offering -5% for graded cards. Kind of make sense. They have to be the easiest thing for a auction company to handle and write up and they still make 10 or 15 percent. Not to shabby if you have low overhead.

They do it because SO MANY folks who have piles of money are into collecting slabbed cards that they can't satisfy the demand, they need more supply, and they're satisfied with the buyer's premium as being enough. They do it because of a huge increase in collectors of slabs instead of cards. They do it to make money.

Its a sign of a weaker competitive position. Many of their knowledgeable card guys--most recently Derek--have left, some collectors refuse to buy from Mastro any more following their president's admissions that they take creases out of cards....and the competition will take things for free. If you are a seller why pay Mastro when others will take whatever you sell for free unless you think you can get a much better price? Increasingly, it seems, you cannot.

You are totally right. There are so many established auction houses and for the run of the mill PSA cards, they pretty much all get the same price. If the net amount is the main thing that is important to you then you will probably go with the auciton house with the lowest fees.

Mastro has been giving 0% for graded cards for quite some time. I think that Goodwin has been advertsising 0% in his ads for a couple of years.

Competition is good.

Jim- you are a one trick pony. Doug said they have changed their policy. They will no longer take out 1st tier wrinkles or do anything to cards. Most true collectors, not the backbone of the hobby, have been taking crap off of cards ever since we started collecting. This has been discussed ad nauseum on the board but you seem to have a very forgetful memory. Maybe you should get Kevin to look at all of your high end graded cards and then you can have a reality check.....oh sorry, I forgot...You will never put your money where your mouth is.....talk is cheap. Why the hostility. I know you are a Mastro apologist so if you want to do business with them or encourage others to do so fine. Meanwhile better have Kevin look at all those cards you bought from them that may have had creases taken out of. There are many collectors I know certainly a number on this board who no longer buy from Mastro. Its undoubtedly having an effect on their business. They don't seem to be getting the premiums they used to. Thus they have to get rid of the selling commission to be competitive. Simple.

While I respect Kevin's abilities I am comfortable with SGC. They have a money back guarantee too. Don't you wish all of your trimmed and altered cards in plastic had that guarantee? How about I pay for SGC to look at your top 20 high grade, pre-wwII cards, and give their opinion? Won't cost you a penney? You are welcome to do the same for me. Doesn't anyone else find it interesting that the offer is for PSA cards only and not SGC? Could it indicate that there is more of a demand for PSA items and that if you're holding SGC cards, Mastro isn't looking for your business?

Mastro probably uses SGC more now...the whole Carter collection, the T215 Pirates, etc. were SGC graded. Why would they do that?

Don't be so naive! I am sure PSA offered favorable advertising terms. If you call Doug at Mastro or anyone else with a big time SGC graded card, I will bet my left...arm...that you can also realize the same terms if not better. Mastro offers 0% publicly so I will assume +5% or more is offered privately but only if one promises to keep the terms in the strictest of confidence...lol

If you think that taking out a crease is bad, you are terribly naive as to what else goes on out there. For anyone who has purchased large quantities of PSA cards to think that you somehow avoided all of the bad stuff is also naive. Some of your favored dealers that you have mentioned make Mastros practices look relatively petty.

But "Why" would they anounce something they were already doing? When one of the giants of the hobby industry does something as this, it seems to have a "cause & effect" on the hobby. Very Interesting...

Maybe increasingly givebacks are the norm. If Mastro, Memory Lane, Goodwin, SCP are now on a level playing field, it should be increasingly common for them to offer 5 to 10% of the sale price to enhance consigners to consign to them.

cards were graded (altered) then crossed and the graders overlooked the alterations just because the cards were already slabbed be it the competition?
Seems like Leon's comments are simple to understand.Card dealers and auction houses have altered-slabbed cards however they got that way and you no doubt own some especially given you claim to have 29% of all"modern" vintage psa graded cards! I might not have them reevaluated either but i wouldn't deny given your hoard it's not reality you your share.

not all of your cards are good. You have 20,000+ slabbed cards and you think not one of them have been "altered?" You are saying that not one of your cards from 1952-1969 has not had a corner laid down or a wrinkle removed? Leon was right when he said that stuff was being removed from cards before grading was operating. We all have something in our collections that have been "altered".
I don't mind the corner crease or wrinkle, it is the hair cut that is being performed on cards that I have the problem with.
