Doyle cards

I'm sure I've missed this here before, but I need a refresher on the significance of the T206 Doyles (Piedmont). I have a hands over head DOYLE, N.Y.; and a portrait DOYLE, N.Y. NAT'L .
I assume I wouldn't be lucky enough to have the error card, but just to be sure...

The Doyle, Natl (hands over head) is the rare one. That card is of Joe Doyle. The portrait card is Larry Doyle. Hope this helps.

i'm sure Ted Z. will jump in here, but a few months, he brought to light a "dot" variation on the Doyle, NY (hands above head) card. do a search for the thread, but basically on some of these cards, there is a small dot after "NY"...

also note: the Doyle, NY card is slightly tuffer to locate because many people hoarded them in the 80's trying to find the error card (also some crooked people were buying them to create fake variation cards)...

BTW Its actually the corrected (correct) version that is the big card, not the error card.

actaually, you are not correct...

a small number of "Slow Joe" Doyle, NY Nat'l cards got off the press FIRST. Joe pitched for Amercian League Highlanders...LARRY Doyle played second base for the NY Giants (Nat'l league)...to rectify this case of mistaken identity...they quickly corrected the problem, by taking off the "Nat'l" part...the rest of them (the corrected versions), are common.

Are you sure? I though the error was the one with Nat'l on the card. Since it is Slow Joe of the Highlanders not Larry of hte Giants. Or am I missing something with your post?

Good to know it's a bit scarce, if anything can be a bit scarce, or somewhat rare. Here's the card. Sorry it's so large. Haven't got the cropping thing down yet.

it is the Doyle, NY Nat'l card that was printed first, then quickly corrected...

Dwight- i don't see the dot, but as i mentioned above, even this more common variation, is still tuff these days

The T206 designer's probably confused Joe Doyle with Larry Doyle (NY Nat'L) and captioned Joe's card with "NAT'L".
But, some smart proof reader caught it very early in the press run of the 350 Series cards. Therefore, only a handful
got out into circulation. This card only exists with a PIEDMONT 350 back....As the PIEDMONT cards were always prin-
ted first.

It is considered one of the rarest pre-war cards in the hobby.

The funny thing is I already knew the quick fix correction, but it slipped my mind. Thats what I get for watching football and reading posts

It would have been cool if they actually corrected both errors and added Amer. to make a 3rd variation.

Thanks much for this. Yes, Doug, I thought the hands over head and portrait poses were of the same player. I suppose then that Larry - the portrait - is quite common?

Still searching for T210 Eldridge, Greensboro, Series 5.
