Who Likes Big Borders? Seriously, I found these two in a large lot recently. These two were well over an inch and a half in width. Does anyone have an idea how large the borders can actually get?

PS 2 Your Guys look good with Singer in the middle, but they are a bit young. Either way we should have fun in the ACC this year. LMK if you make it to NC for any games and the first 3-4 rounds are on me....

Brian, thanks, much appreciated. I think the team will be better this year than last's but still not very good. No size and a slow PG does not help. Btw, is Tyler ever going to graduate? He's like 30, right? Seriously, this year they will be very, very tough.

Those cards are obscene. Brian, I had forgotten that you collect large bordered T206s. They're so... larger than life.


By the way, I just looked at Carolina's schedule this afternoon, It looks to me that they have a good chance of going undefeated. Go Heels!

That looks more like an NCAA tournament schedule than real life... A game every 3 days, 2 sometimes? Plus, you can't go through the ACC undefeated anymore.....

So-if these were cut at the factory with wide borders, then there must be some real narrow cards around, so cards that measure less than the "normal" side should not always be judged as trimmed. Interesting.

Hi Rick,
Wrong..... Most of the Big Borders cards came from three very different finds, where the card sizes differed from wayyyyy oversized to slightly undersized. I will put up some scans tomorrow when I have time, but quality control was not a big thing in 1909... Be well Brian

Hi Brian, thanks for responding. My thinking is that if the T206's were cut from a sheet, if some were cut larger then some would have to be cut smaller. Did the size of the sheets vary?

Hi Rick,
I think it was more to do with the quality control than anything else. Nobody cared in 1909 if the card in the pack was off center, miscut, or off color, they only cared about having a job. I think the majority of the cards were produced at the "acceptable size" while another 5-10% were produced larger or smaller. It doesn't take a grader or a rocket scientist to tell only someone who's handled a few hundred or thousand.. Be well Brian

It seems the vast majority of the large border T206s depicted in this thread are oversized at the top border. Could it be that uncut sheets had an extra large border above the cards at the very top of the sheet?

It depends on the card. For instance Green background Cobb's tend to have more bottom border than top... I will post a few scans tomorrow. Be well Brian

Cool cards.
I picked up these two several years apart, but they have many identical characteristics, and both are unusually wide T206s. I have reasons to think these came from a column of cards on the right-hand edge of the sheet.

Also, certain cards are often seen with wider than average left and right borders. I can think of Crawford (Batting) and Young (Glove) off the top of my head. I suspect it has something to do with those cards' placement on the sheet as well.

That's what I'm thinking. Since all the cards pictured on this thread have oversized TOP borders and regular sized BOTTOM borders, and since there's no hint of a player and team name at the top, then all these cards have to be from the top row on the sheet.

Hi JK,
Before I got married and had kids, I went to all of the games.... Now I go to 5-10 a year depending on how well they do in the Tournaments(ACC, NCAA). I have been to about 8 or 9 Final Fours and was lucky enough to be in New Orleans in 1982 and 1993 when we won.... Hated to miss 2005, but at least Mom was there.. Be well Brian

Here's a link to an old post that lists the sizes of about 500 T206 cards, almost all Piedmonts.

Larger than 1.5 in width seems rare (3 out of 500), but the norm is to be above the nominal width of 1 7/16.
