That is not the typical gift that a nice old aunt would come up with, even after rummaging around in her attic. What is this item's history prior to you sitting under the Christmas Tree and opening up the package?

The more rigid this item is, the more value it has, in my eyes.

I think there was a newspaper that issued sport stamps, but cant remember which one at the moment.

Hi Will, this was issued around 1936. Your "stamp" was cut too close to the picture on the top, otherwise it would say Boston American, Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph, or some other major big city newspaper. These are cataloged in the big SCD book, and Stengel is NOT listed, he is probably a recent discovery. Book value is $12-$20 in nm. Randy

Thanks for the replies.
Thicker than newsprint, thin cardboard. If from a newspaper, must have been an insert.
Not in my 2000 SCD - trip to Borders soon.
History - sitting in back of dealer/friend's showcase 9am this morning. She asked me if I knew anything about it (no). We completed a small deal and I asked if I got a birthday discount - she then gave me the Stengel.

Willy, In 1936 there were several newspapers that issued these as part of the newspaper. If yours is thicker, it was probably pasted onto a thicker piece of paper and trimmed down.

Yours does differ from the others that I have seen/owned as the paper issuing it isn't written above the picture and it appears the stamp design ends on yours, which it doesn't on the others. Three issuers I have seen are all listed above the photo, they are "Boston American" (also issued some with "Sunday Advertiser"), "Detroit Times", and finally the "Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph".
