For the 3rd straight time, the "54 Cabal" won a complete set of caramel cards. The lineup was a little different from the first two times, some veterans but some new rookies, but we outslugged the competition to win the E94 set which was ranked #2 on the PSA registry. I didn't feel the cards were nearly as nice as the E94 set we won in April from Mastro, though, and the price was about half the April price. |

The problem with the entire lot versus individual lot format is that my back-up lots were closed by the time the final hammer went down on the Old Judge lot. I could only afford one card in the $5000 range. My #1 was the Old Judge Dummy Hoy. Since I had to hold on for that situation to end, my #2, the e90-1 Speaker slipped away. Mastro cost themselves $1,000-2,000 from me on this format. If there was 20-30 other bidders like me, their "have it both ways" format backfired. |

The other problem with the individual vs. lot issue is that many people do not even bother for the reason you mentioned because they figure it will go as a group in the end. It was an interesting novelty at first, but I think most bidders don't like it. I know that I did not put serious bids in on a lot of cards I wanted because I thought it would be a distraction that kept me away from winning lots I had a real chance to win. Had I thought the CJ lot would have been broken, I would have bid on several other cards. For example, the PSA 7 Joe Jackson went for a steal! I am sure if that card were auctioned by itself it would have gone for nearly twice that amount! |

Jim--I agree; I do not like the format. There were some Old Judge lots I might have pursued more vigorously but it just wasn't worth the hassle of dealing with that structure. |

I generally will not bid on lots that have a "master lot" also. Too many other things to bid on only to be let down after trying to win a single lot and have someone win it out from under you as the "whole" lot. I do know of one time when a board member played it perfectly and got the one lot he wanted and was very happy. He paid a lot for it but the master lot was such a high next increment that the person bidding on the master lot didn't want to go another bid on it, obviously. It was a large lot of Old Judge Cabinets not too long ago. I have often given thought to how I would sell my E94 Overprint set if I were to auction it. I am not going to (hopefully) anytime soon but am 50/50 as to the master and seperate lot format or only the seperate lot format...or only the full set in one lot? It's unique and would be very hard to duplicate..... |

I agree with Jim too. That format seems to piss off a lot of customers and keep away some potential customers. |

I think many of the OJ HOF'ers closed at much less than recent market prices but I guess that is a moot point anyway with the one lot taking them all. |

I consigned graded 1961 and 1963 Fleer football sets that traded for $400 and $1100 respectively, about the cost of grading. The M131s previously traded at $2000 each; lot 627 traded at about half that. There are B&W e97s at about $200 per card, well under where they have traded in the past. These are only from my quick look at the lots I am involved in. |

they won't end under $300 ea.....and my guess is they will be a fair amount higher.....talking about an auction before it's over with respect to price.....is not even a moot point imo since they could be at $200 ea now and end at $1000 ea...who knows?.... |

Not a wise thing to broadcast a lot you are interested in and how it is going cheap before the auction ends, unless you are the consignor. |

The Cracker Jack set went off very low last night; surely if each card were auctioned individually the prices would have been considerably higher. In an attempt to grab as much dough as possible, Mastro's insistence upon employing a group price v. individual lots cost the consignor at least 100K. |

The consignor of the CJ set is crushed- he was under the impression it would go for double what it did. The combination of the timing of the auction and the set vs. single format really cost him. And I'm sure all the negative publicity since last December isn't helping either. |

Yeah, not sure that the beginning of a holiday weekend is the best time for an auction -- though the two lots I won were at record breaking prices it would seem. You can just go through the CJs one at a time and see card after card that was $500 short, $1000, $2000, etc. etc. etc. |

i have spoken with a couple of other people and they wont be sending mastro anything in the future. the combination of low selling prices (or not reaching true potential) and then waiting an average of 4 months for payout (from sending material to payout) isnt very appealing anymore. |

I'm sure Doug is reading this and I'm sure he's dealing with the disappointment over the Cracker Jack sale. As Mastro is primarily concerned with the bottom line (as they should be) I'm sure they are thinking twice about ever using that auction format again. |

I predict that that system will be scrapped. It's just getting too much negative feedback. And when single bidders see they are faced with the likelihood of losing the entire group they will stop participating in those lots. |
