1908 was the last time the Cubbies won the World Series. This evening the Cubbies took over first place in the N.L. Central. Lets post cards of the 1908 Cubs team in hopes of winning a world series before the 100th aniversary of the last Cubs world series victory.

It's just been floating around in my collection for years. Can't say where I got it. The message makes reference to the arrows on the front of the card that point to rooftop bleachers. Much the same as we have today at Wrigley Field. He ends his message with "Some Park, Eh?" I couldn't agree more some 99 years later.

the arrows are pointed at the roof where the huge Budweiser roof is currently. Could they be illuding to being a Cub fan and a Bud Man in the words of the immortal Harry Carey????

I don't think that arrow points to where the Bud sign is. For starters, the Bud sign is at Wrigley Field. Wrigley opened in 1914, as the home park for Bill Weegham's Chicago Whales. I think it was called Weegham Field. After the 1915 season, Weegham bought the Cubs as the Federal League folded, he combined his Whales players with his Cubs players, keeeping the best, to make the 1916 Cubs of the National League. I think the park was still called Weegham Field until Wrigley bought the park and the Cubs.

Point is, the place where the Cubs played the World Series in 1908 was torn down in the mid teens, I think, and where the Bud sign is now is nowhere near that arrow.

Still, it is a great post card!

Welcome back.

I think your images lack a Kroh and a Zimmerman. Sugar's book lists 36 Cubs, and he does not include that McIntyre, probably because Brooklyn is first in the caption, and because he's in a Brooklyn uniform.

Ken, I think some folks think that Wrigley Field dates back to when the Cubs won a World Series... hardly anything on the planet is that old. And few folks realize that Wrigley Field is a surviving bit of the Federal League. So I was attempting to clear that up. I left the use of "illuding" alone, figuring that you intended "alluding", but maybe not.

Great cards!!!! Frank, now that I think about it, I do remember the history of Wrigley. World series have been played there but never won there by the Cubs. Build a new stadium immediately!!!

Yes, I think Frank has it right...you're missing the Kroh and Zimmerman, and then included the McIntyre...making those adjustments would get you to that 36-card number that is ususally thrown out there...
I am going for the 37, though (to include the McIntyre)

I may wind up busting out all my graded cards so I can array them side by side like you have done...much more appealing.

Sorry to have missed you at Coopertown...I was hoping to make it to the card show and introduce myself, but managing the weather, a couple of autogrpah sessions, and my kids' baseball clinic and various meltdowns didn't allow the time. Maybe next time.

Hey Jason,

I just posted a photo of my box of white border tobacco cards... which takes up about as much space as 8 slabbed cards stacked upon one another. It is in that "Another new T206 collector... " thread.

So if you do bust 'em out, you'll find you need much less space to store them. And it becomes easy to sort 'em different ways depending on what you're interested about. By series, by team, by brand... it makes it easy to see the uniform changes and the like.

I went over and read your other post. Very interesting to read your progression regarding storage and display. I have gone through similar journey, but I am currently stuck in the "I've got to get everything in slabs!" panic...some of which comes from my relative inexperience with expensive vintage cards and a fear of getting duped. The other is an infantile fascination with "how much is this card worth?" thinking.

I would also agree with you regarding your comments on sorting the Monster. I suppose they are simply done alphabetically most of the time because it is the most vanilla listing and can help out folks (newbies?) who don't know all the teams and players...but I have to say that since reading posts from you and Ted and the like, some of the other ways to sort and collect T206 are far more interesting than a simple alpha sort. As you mention, different sorting methods help you learn the cards and history (the series, teams, backs, etc all contribute to learning the deadball era)

For now, I am going to go through with my original goal, which is to get all the Cubs (T200, T201, T205, T206, and T207), in SGC holders. Then I can be reasonably sure that I know what I have, I can see them all in those cool black-background frames, and then we'll see how I feel about it after that.

Thanks for your posts. I enjoy them, along with Ted Z, very much, as they help keep me interested in the quest from time to time.

Oh, and before I forget, since you said you would give a burglar some 80s and 90s stuff, I am available to accept free deliveries by appt and without the threat of personal harm, as long as the names on the front read Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson, Kirby Puckett, Ron Cey, or Walter Payton!!!
