Help me decide which of these sets to pursue on the side?

I'm dedicated to the T206's....as slow of a process as it is...however I've been thinking about starting another set to the side. Maybe only pickup one lower grade card a month or so...and I'll never finish that set so it won't much matter other than something else cool to look at. I'd appreciate any thoughts on which of these two sets to grab a card of here or there...

N172 Old Judge or T3 Turkey Red?

If you want something cool to look at it, you can't go wrong with the gorgeous T3's. Plus, they make nice compliments to t206's as many share the same or a similar image.

It would be the same players you enjoy collecting now with the T206, very similar looking artwork style -- just jumbo sized cards. The two would go well together.

I would go with N172. A large amount of the players from T206 are in the T3 set. With the OJ's, you will have a much different player selection. As Leon said, diversity is good.

Ha ha...thanks for the email whoever you are about going after strip cards here or there..but um, no. It is between these two sets as they are the ones I really enjoy looking at. And with the money I have tied in to T206's, it would only be one pickup a month or so in the $150 range...so beaters.

Seriously, that is one of the joys of type collecting--it is virtually impossible to get stuck in a rut when there is so much out there. I have poor focus and no patience, which is not something I wish on others, but I found it very liberating to get away from strictly set collecting. I still chase a dozen or so sets spanning different eras and sports, but the fun for me in the past year has been in picking up a 1941 Play Ball Ruffing, a Neilson's Sisler, S74 Color Silk Cobb, Domino Disk Bobby Wallace, Colgan's Wagner and yes, a couple of PSA 9s from the 80's for $3 each--Mike Schmidt and Ricky Henderson. You get to pick the cards that strike you as interesting, and not just fill commons for the sake of trudging along on a checklist.

Dave, if you have no intention of finishing this other set, than why start it as a set? Choose a theme--HOFers, favorite team, guys that grew up in your home state, etc. and pick up a few here and there from different sets--like Leon says diversity is cool.

If you're determined to limit yourself to one of those two, I'll go contrarian and say take the OJ's. A far different era, different card appearance and intrigue. T3s are gorgeous, but IMHO resemble the t206 too closely--same lithography, sometimes same poses, same player selection, etc.

totally different era, players, style of card, image type...I would think that this would be a much more gratifying way to spend the dough...and you could immerse yourself in the history of a different era, which you might find important....I would think the T3s, while gorgeous, would frustrate given that its the same players, and indeed, buying the same image twice would feel like a waste of money (if money is a limiting factor)...

Todd, unfortunately a type collector I'll never be. I'm a little too anal when it comes to uniformity. I tend to prefer everything the same...which is why I have just collected T206's...and since I started with PSA graded...haven't strayed from that either. So unfortunately it will be one set or the other...at least for the time being. At this moment, I'm slightly leaning toward the Old Judges...would be kind of cool to also eventually get the couple players in Old Judge sets that also appeared in T206, ie, Griffith, Duffy, etc...even though they would be a bit pricey i'm afraid...more than the $150 I'd be budgeting!

I'm with you Dave, I like uniformity in my collecting habits too. Nothing wrong with having focus, there's so much nice stuff out there one could easily go broke real fast.

I dabbled in T3, took a whack at E95, and then started up the M116 trail -- but the Monster was always right there, waiting for me, taunting me... with those eyes glaring... and those fangs gnashing... must... not... give.... in........... to.............. distracting............. old.......... cardboard!

Like T206 and RayB, I took a dive into the T3's...and i fell on concrete...

If you've got the dough to go down the T3 route, good for you...it's a beautiful set but in extremely high demand.

That's absolutely right. For some reason people have started recently to buy T-3s. A few weeks ago a card store in the Bay Area was carrying about a dozen T-3s, then after a week, all of them were gone. I get the feeling somebody or some group of people are trying to corner the market.

The card store I go to prices their prewar stuff (including T-3s) very high. Also, this dozen or so T-3s were all bought by one person. So I'm just speculating here.

I've been type card collecting but i had a couple decent deals come my way and i now have 20% of the E95 set. I now have an eye out for E95's! I like a set like this because its small(25 cards) and the prices arent outrageously high. A set like this might be what your looking for. Esp if your only looking to pick up a card or two a month. You'll want to keep to a small set to give yourself a realistic chance of finishing it.

I really like the E95's. They are one of the only sets I know of that have cards with really cool blue-sky-with-clouds backgrounds - eg McIntyre. But for some reason I've been thinking about tinkering around with E96's. Not sure why those over the 95's. I think overall the 95's are a nicer looking set. I just like the E96's for some reason - definitely the blue-green fade on some of the cards is awesome.

I think this would be a great time to collect E96 if you wanna go for it. I think the set is underated considering how rare they really are. E95s are quiyr a bit easier. Thing is its low on HOF's which some dont like, but there great looking cards, and not ridiculously priced, good luck!

If you want a little fun on the side...Reminds me of a fellow ball player of mine.
Dave had the most beautiful wife I ever seen in my lifetime and I have seen many a beautiful woman. Well on road trips, Dave's eye would wander and he would stray. One day while we were sipping brews at a well known road water hole, I asked my best friend, "Why in the world do you go after all this hamburger when you have a steak at home?" He thought about it for a while and looked at me as seriously as I ever seen him and said, " You know sometimes I like a good hamburger."
Don't know what that had to do with this post but it reminded me of that story.
If you want a little fun on the side, why go sooo costly? Grab on to a lesser vintage set that you can pick up lots of and put together in between T206 buys. Find a nice looking baseball or football set or sets from the 60's or 70's and put it together raw in binders. Buy bulk lots, trade with others and not spend a fortune and see you collection grow. It's a blast to do like we use to as kids. The monster is my one vintage love, but I'm having more fun putting together 60's football from my childhood than I ever thought I would. You can amass alot of cards quickly and still keep the bulk of your dollars for T206 purchases. Good luck, Joe

Trading is a lost art, when we were kids we would make all sorts of wild trades. There are some sets where Mickey Mantle was plentiful, so you would make wild trades like two Mickey Mantles and a Juan Marichal rookie for a '66 Willie Mays, Card No. 1.
