I picked this up about a month ago from a forum member off the BST.

The more I look at the postcard, the third player in, from the left, of the front row sure does look like Cobb.

Can this be possible?

Does anybody recognize the insignia on the jersey they are wearing?

Any help is appreciated.

Yes it's Cobb. Is Jimmie Foxx the last person standing in the back row? They played together in Philadelphia during Cobb's last two years (1927 & 28)

That's not Cobb. Look at pictures of him at the end of his career and compare.

I agree that it looks too young to be cobb.

but if it is earlier. He sure looks a lot like him.

here is cobby from 1922 and he already looks older than that postcard
(mine is definitely 1922, I've learned a lot about this item since last posting it)

is the back blank?

was it postally used? if so - what is the date?

the date would definitely influence my opinion.

If it is 1907-1914ish... I say it sure does look like him.

In the 20s, it looks as though he is too young.

Late 20s or 30s and I think Cobb should have taken a paternity test.

Thanks for the responses so far. For some reason, my scanner makes the scan way too bright, but the back is divided and unused. I really do not know but some of the players do look familiar.

it looks like Velox diamonds in corners.

That dates it to 1907-1914.


Based on that... I am going to stick with the opinion that the man in the image is indeed Ty Cobb.

There certainly is a strong resemblance to Cobb but why is he wearing a "C" on his jersey?

Not Cobb. Cobb has earlobes that are round...there are two kinds of ears...ears with lobes and ears that taper straight down into the head. This is not a feature that ever changes on a person no matter the age. A very good likeness, but it's not him.

the "C" stands for Cobb of course.

Seriously... When I was researching a postcard I had (recently sold).... one of the pitchers pitched against Smokey Joe Wood. Not in the majors - but rather, two town team rivalries decided to hire ringers for their annual game. One hired local talent (minor / major)... the other team... well, the Red Sox were in town and they were hired.

Could Cobby have played in one of these type games? He may just have been a ringer.

Little did the New Yorkers know that the Bennington council had hired the Boston Red Sox, who had played an exhibition game in Burlington just two days earlier. With Smokey Joe Wood and Ray Collins splitting the mound duties, the "Bensox" won 11-1 in a game described by the Bennington Free Press as a "runaway for the Speed Boys." The minor league all-stars "by comparison looked like a lot of children." Evans was the losing pitcher, giving up nine runs in just four innings."

That's definitely Cobb. Also, Jim Thorpe directly to his right and Joe Jackson top row, 3rd from left. Plus Josh Gibson top row, far right.

Man, that's a lot of HOFers on one postcard! And all playing for an unknown local semi-pro team. Amazing!

LOL. Yeah, I had thought that was Thorpe myself.

While Cobb was on plenty of barnstorming teams that he put together to make a buck during spring training when he refused to sign a contract year after year...there's no way this was one of them. I just don't see it in his face.

I think it's Steve McQueen.

Seriously though Turner, I can definitely see why you think it may be Cobb. I don't think it is, but if someone were to demonstrate that it is Cobb I wouldn't fall over from shock either. Close resemblance, at least.

Once I decided it looked like McQueen, though, I couldn't get past that and try to think in terms of Cobb anymore.

I find it funny, or a bit ironic - that the postcard looks more like Cobb than many many issues that everyone tries to collect. Including:

Not Foxx. I collect news photos and wire photos of Foxx, and old cardboard. I have about 75 originals, and hundreds of Foxx items. Sorry, not Jimmie. he had broader shoulders than that. And a different face. Happy Easter !!!!!
