I realize this isn't a popular set just yet and rarely see this Issue discussed... |

Here is my favorite 1916 E135 Collins-McCarthy card. I like this set very much. |

The correct year for this set, including the blank backs, is 1917. The reason that the pop reports have 2 separate years is because the set was incorrectly listed as a 1916 issue for a very long time, and many cards were graded as such. There are several different backs for the cards (Collins McCarthy, Boston Store, Weils, etc.). Obviously the producer of the cards sold them to companies to put their own back advertising on them. My guess is that the blank backs were simply just not produced with an ad, then somehow distributed. There is no reason to believe that these cards were an earlier issue, based on the player/team combinations in the set. I hope this helps. |

Andy's right--there is no solid evidence that distribution of blank backs preceded that of ad backs. There is arguably some precedence for such conclusion--m101s. Mendelsohn advertised these, either as blank-backed singles or on an uncut sheet with your name on the bottom front of the sheet before The Sporting News cards were issued, albeit only by several weeks to a few months. It is likely that some of the other advertisers got their cards before TSN and that collectors got their blank backs before then as well, although there seems little significance to this, as the cards are the same but for the backs. |

Back in the early 1980's a friend of mine who was a very large collector/dealer made a complete set of this. Before he sold the set in 1990, he made a poster of the complete set along with a complete reprint set. I have the reprint set and can scan the whole thing in for others to enjoy if anyone is interested. |

Shane, that would be a terrific gesture. I can't imagine assembling that entire set. Is the poster available for sale any longer? |
