Do any of you get your beaters graded, knowing that they'll come back as poor/fair? |

2 reasons: if you are going to sell them they will do better than raw beaters but remember to factor in the cost of slabbing; on scarcer cards slabbing makes them more eye appealing and presentable plus offers protection from daily miscues. |

I guess it goes without saying, but ultimately you'll have to answer the question yourself, but as a fellow limited-budget collector, I'd recommend against submitting your low-end commons. |

I try to only grade common T206 cards that will grade an SGC 40/VG/3. I have less strict rules regarding HOFers and Southern Leaguers. I am trying to maintain an average grade of 40 or higher on the SGC Set Registry. I have about 200 cards that I could get graded to move me up the registry, but it would be at the expense of my average grade. Also, it would be very expensive and not particularly worth it in terms of resale value when I upgrade those beaters. |

For low grade commons, save the grading fees and get more cards; especially if you are on a limited budget as you say. |

I guess I'm in the minority in that I like to grade prewar beaters so they don't get, well, more beaten. |

But Al, aren't your beaters all HOF'ers? That's a different story. |

There is a generally implied "no return" when selling graded cards. (Only once have I had a graded returned) The buyer can't complain, "I couldn't tell from the photo that it was p-f, g-ex, nmt etc". Also, why risk selling a fake, trim or altered card and risk getting a slanderous negative jeopardizing future sales. |

I have the same issue Rob. I like the idea of a complete SCG graded set but it's simply too much when it all comes down to it. 524 (eventually) graded cards...how? Stacked? In like fifty binders? I am going to eventually go completely raw (most raw now) and binder the cards. No real reason (I believe) to have a goofy grinned Egan in a 10 holder for $10 when four slabbed cards could go to adding a common card to my set. Especially since you use the word "limited finance" which is my life and in this hot market, I'm adding at a turtle's pace. Good luck. |

I do get my beaters graded. I agree with Steve F above in that they are much easier to sell and are protected much better. |

I grade mine all the time for numerous reasons. (1) they look better in the sgc slab than if they are not slabbed; (2) offers greater protection; (3) easier to sell if I choose to do so. Finally, there is no question about grading when they look like this: |
