Need ID help....e95/e96 Notebook cards

I think most of you know I am an autograph guy, but I have had this for years just laying around.
Is it real? Is it a repro? Is it an error?
Paper stock, blank back, size of a T206.

I too believe it's a notebook cut out....still worth good money, though not what a regular card would bring.....

I have owned 2 of the Mathewsons

here is one I have now.

Dont bother sending it in to SGC, they will not grade this issue yet.
I just got this Matty back last week.
The funny thing is SGC has graded (misidentfied) them in past years as E95/E96 "Proofs", but they wont grade them now.
But they do grade the similar 1910 W-Unc. now (just got 4 back graded), so these 1913 notebook cards may be graded in the future.




Here is a scan (below) of the only complete notebook I have seen from this series.

The notebook is full of homework (little girl owned it) from Sep/Oct of 1913. Thats where the date of 1913 comes from.
I believe the notebook survived complete because the little girl didnt care about the cards on the cover and didnt cut them out.

Acquired a couple of these off of Ebay today. I guess we can up that list of the known players to "19" (Konetchy & Krause).

I believe I've also seen a Collins which would up that total to 20. This doesn't include the odd handcut Cobb that was cut off of a scorecard (I believe).

Any ideas on how scarce these actually are? I always valued them around the same as the actual cards. Not as desireable perhaps since they're handcut but prettytough to come by....

If you reproduce a original card issue on a notebook cover, isn't the resultant "card" once cutout, a reprint?

I have seen some that have the colors off registered (slightly misaligned). I would think that would prove they are not copies of a card, but rather used the original separated color plates (whatever they are called) just like most cards of this era. These images are very clean especially the caption.

I find this subject quite interesting, and hope my comments are not viewed as criticism as much as inquiry. I was unaware that the notebook covers used the actual printing plates that were employed to make the original cards.

Didn't someone also do this with Exhibit cards in the 70s or 80s? I believe that those are considered reprints, eventhough original plates reportedly were used. Or do I have my "facts" incorrect?

I would consider it the same as when Tango Eggs, American Caramel (E106), General Baking (D303), Mino, Kotton, etc. used some of the same images (plates) from earlier caramel cards issued 6-7 years earlier with American Caramel (E90-1), Dockman (E92), Mello-Mint (E105) etc.

Except the gap between the Notebook cards and the slightly earlier printed E95 and E96 cards is only about 2-4 years. They are not a reprint, In my opinion a reprint is a card where they reprint the exact card (front and back). Anyone who has seen or owned a notebook card would never confuse it with a E95 or E96 because of the paper stock and blank back.

No one would call a Tango Eggs card a reprint of a Dockman, even though they used the same images (plates) 7 years later.

Just my opinion....
