People collect different niches. If you wanted to collect a signed check of each original HOFer (Cobb, Johnson, Mathewson, Ruth and Wagner) you'd need the Matty. He died relatively young so there's much less of his signatures available (let alone on a check) and collecting memorabilia has gotten pretty competitive as of late. People like the difficult to find and own pieces of history and a Matty check is a difficult piece to find. |

Mathewson signed checks are actually quite rare and usually sell for around $18-20K. I think the fact that it was made out to his son gives it a tad more strength. My lawyer just purchased one from a dealer for $24K. Highly doubt there was one on eBay for $5K as the market is "very strong". |

that the check, being written to his son, whose name is Christy Mathewson Jr was the clincher on this. ANY Mathewson signatures are tough and checks are very popular right now. I find it amazing that so many of these guys saved checks for so long. While I'm sure they were circulating in the 1970's, their popularity has only recently exploded. So with this check you actually get TWO Christy Mathewson signatures since they had the same name. Nice collectible. I have a lot of checks and always look for odd ways to collect them like being written to cash and co-signed on the back. I have a Waite Hoyt check written to Waite Hoyt on the front and signed Waite Hoyt on the back. I have Happy Chandler check written to University of Kentucky for his football tickets. I have Pee Wee Reese check written to Hillerich and Bradsby. Kinda oddball stuff but a lot of fun. Okay....I'll stop now as this is an OT thread and I don't want the OT police after me......at least I didn't start it....... |

$21,000.00 sounds about in line for a Matty signed check. I saw one at the National this year for around $27,000.00. |
