"limited edition of 500 as I recall"... If you or anyone else wants one I have several I would be willing to sell for much much less than the final bid (but mine aren't framed and I can promise you mine is not an advertisement that about 100 years older)...
The subjects include Anson, O'Rourke, Stovey and some other A-list 19th century players (I forget who but I'll check if anyone is interested).

From the third picture, I thought it looked like an N173 recently matted and framed. If it's a laser copy or recent print, then I will have a nice print to stack in my attic.

I just looked at the first picture again and it looks way too large next to the other items on the desk to be a card. What size are the prints?

RC, maybe you can get out of this if you provide information to the seller that these are not 100+ years old.

They won't quite fit on my scanner bed (so they are very long -- longer than legal paper and wider too).... I wanted to post a scan but the ones I have are too big (as files)... Later tonight I'll scan part of one with less resolution and maybe I can past it.... The lower left hand corner (as I recall) says 1987 in very small print--- also beneath the word "Cigarettes" on the bottom it should read "Century of Baseball" in small print.

I can try to send scans if you would like to email me w/ your address etc. They really are beautiful.

Daniel,

You're right, but since I only paid $150, I probably paid around retail for a framed generic poster/print. It won't be my best purchase on ebay, but it may turn out half decent. A 1980's poster is better than a reprint card. I'll post an update when it arrives. Regards

Brian,

Thanks, for the help. I'll see what I have when it arrives and report back. It sounds like it's the same as the ones you have.

RC,

When I asked about the card when the auction first started, this is what the dealer wrote:

Hello, how thick is this piece? and what are the dimensions?

Hello, I have owned this piece for about 14 years. We moved and I have no place that my wife will let me put it up. Its a little larger than an 8 x 10. The frame is newer and only about half an inch thick. I was reluctant to take it apart..although with all the questions I may need to.

It is a very old paper...I am no expert on this stuff...does not look like a reprint. I bought this at an antique dealer in Richmond Va. We were down there doing a show and I was out and about and we found it. I paid $200 back the, I dont know if I got took or if that was a good price. I dont think reprints etc were a factor back in that era. It never crossed my mind at the time. The store focused on tobacco advertising and general store items. I was actually out chasing unopened cigarette packs. We had over 20 unopened Peidmont packs once...long ago...lol.!!!

I think I may still have a couple of complete sets of these. I got them when they came out. Didn't know they had this kind of value.

I know the guy in Lexington, KY who commissioned the paintings and made the prints. He has recently made postcards of them that are being sold at the hall of fame............think there were 10-12 paintings of which 8 were seleted to be made into the 9x12 or so prints in two sets of 4 prints. They are beautiful prints and I have all 8 framed (4 to a frame) hanging in my basement. The original oil paintings and about 5000 or so of the leftover stock were sold in a Mastronet auction 5-6 years ago I believe. I don't know what the edition size was but it was well into the thousands. They were colorized versions of N173's.

The one in question appears to have been aged artificially and then framed and sold. I wouldn't be surprised if the seller was duped on them but it's conservatively worth about $8.00-$10.00. I saw the sets of (4) prints selling for about $20 each (for 4 prints) over last few years.

Of the eight or so of these made, were any of them Boston players and if so, would anyone know where to obtain it? I would be really interested in having one.

that the frame covers the bottom 1/2 inch of the piece. If the frame were to be removed, you would see that the bottom of these have a year (1987-1990) and a series on them (series 1-6). I have the set of four from the first series. They measure 9 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches. They are extremely attractive, but they really aren't worth much.
The first series of four consist of:

Mike Kelly (Boston)
Jim O'Rourke (NY)
Delahanty (Phil)
Cap Anson (Chicago)

They are "lithographs of oil paintings of the N173 Old Judge Cabinet cards".

Hope that helps.
J

from the hall of fame. Nice quality. I have a couple of sets and an uncut sheet directly from the guy who made them.

Wish I still had those 7 EXMT N173's I bought from him about 3-4 years ago............

No matter what it's market value, anything that the owner hangs from the wall, and that he visitors enjoy looking at on the wall, has real $$ worth in my opinion. People pay money to rent a couch for the living room and to buy flowers for the window. I (very roughly) calculate the display value of an item displayed in a home to be $100 per year.

People are sometimes intimidated about buying fine art photographs ('What if it's a fake?,' etc). I tell them that if you pay under $80, really like the image and are buying it to hang from the wall, there's little to worry about. Even if it turns out to be a fake, it's probably still worth $50 in display and eye-candy value.

I would only want one or some for their display value. The postcards are nice too though and I would think they would look very nice framed together.

The "brave collector" above didn't leave contact info -- if he (or anyone else) wants any fo the lithographs... please contact me at bhodes@rcn.com -- I still have some extras to spare...

unless I suddenly decide that they were passed down to me from one of my great-grandfathers (even though they were somewhere in eastern europe in 1887)and put them on ebay...
