Low grade preference

I know there are a lot of opinions concerning grading organizations (personal preference, best resale, etc). However, I've noticed a trend in regards to low grade stuff. It seems that SGC vintage cards in G-VgEx seem to do better than PSA in many cases.

I'm theorizing that it may have to do with their scale (eg...SGC 40 = VG 3). Is there a psychological aspect where 40 looks better than 3 on the label? Or, could it simply be confidence in SGC's ability to grade cards and screen out reprint cards or cards that have been altered?

I think the people who collect in the low to middle grades are very serious about their collecting and like to buy pleasing cards that fit into their budgets. This group seems to feel that SGC is stricter and more accurate so these cards become very desirable. When you get into the higher grades, particularly when you cross the line into the set registry crowd, they seem to prefer PSA. That just tends to be the trend today.

It would be interesting to see what the pop reports are for for cards that grade below 7. I have no doubt that PSA dominates the 7 and up range, but just how big a difference is there in the pops in the 6 or lower catagory. I would suspect it is even closer if you go 5 and lower.

I haven't seen that trend in the Goudeys - low grade cards in PSA holders trade at a slight premium compared to their SGC counterparts.

What issues have you seen the SGC cards being higher? It does seem that as for vintage cards, PSA is very strong in the Goudey cards, but SGC is as strong or stronger in almost all other issues. So maybe that explains the difference in the low grades.

I hadn't really considered Goudeys as a sample. I'm primarily looking at pre-1930 issues (mainly E, T, and the like). Goudeys seem to have a little more hobby prominence, as Beckett even has a pulse on them.

It's tough to say whether for example VG candy or tobacco cards trade higher with one grading service than the other, but I think it's likely that if you gave each of the members of network54 a large group of raw vintage cards, I would bet more would be sent to SGC than to PSA.

i collect lower grade e and t cards and prefer to buy(or submit to) in sgc holders.the small cards look better w/black background than in psa holders.but i would send larger cards such as goudey's and playball to psa as i prefer their holders for these cards. so maybe others think like this too(as we all are a little________)

I would have never imagined a search for Low-grade HOF cubbies would be so difficult.....although in this case, i'd rather have SGC than PSA ... but i'm looking for beaters...
