R-304 Demaree Diecuts

I've always wanted to own an R-304 diecut -- probably for 20 years. I almost won the Luke Appling that was in the Barry Halper auction, but was outbid by just a few dollars.

I finally won one of these -- a Carl Hubbell, who is a few notches above Appling anyhow. I will be happy with this card no matter what it's worth, but I am curious to know if I got a good deal, overpaid, or paid about right. Do any of you have any idea about the value of these things? I paid $525 for one with a couple of light creases that (at least in the scan) are not very noticeable.

Also, how rare are these? The Standard Catalog lists some of these as unnumbered because the numbered tab on all known copies is missing. That makes it sound to me like there are only 1 or 2 known of some of these cards.

Can't help you with any info about the set (where's Fightin' Dan Mckee when you need him?), but did you know that Al Demaree is in the t222 set? He was a better artist than pitcher...

I won 3 of these cards from the same seller you got the Hubbell from... they are GREAT cards!!! I do not see them around much... I payed in the 250's-450 range for my 3 apiece..

I have handled a few of these, but they are extremely tough to come by. I think for $500 you did pretty well. Hubbell is much more desirable than your average HOFer. Most people are content with only owning one example from this set. I have always been intrigued by the generic bodies with the head of the actual player incorporated into the design. They date from 1934-35, and there is a wrapper or two that have been found from the Dietz Gum Co. A dealer even found a game board from the set in an antique shop-it is advertised on the wrapper.

There is a great article on the set in one of the VCBC back issues. Can't remember what issue it was in.

It can be found in issue 16 of vcbc which is one higher than i have up to so i cant read it or help you out
