Mastro auction - way to go UPS

That was a pretty quick turn around on the last Mastro auction. The package arrived.

I heard a knock at my door and by the time I answered the door the UPS guy was back in his truck and my package was on the ground just waiting for "me" to pick it up.

I couldn't believe that "Brown" didn't wait for a signature. Printed clearly on the front of the package are the words "Adult Signature Reqd. - MIN 21"

Perhaps UPS should spell out the word REQUIRED. I suppose some idiot might mistake that for Adult Signature "Requested" which might imply that it's not really required.

Go UPS!!!

You must have done a wire transfer?

I used to send personal checks, but this time mailed a cashier's check to see if I could reduce the 1-month turn-around.

The guy handed me the package, but required no signature, even though that same little label was on the front__"adult signature req'd--min. 21" Not quite as bad, since he could see he waas giving it to someone "min. 21"--but I guess they don't require the "adult signature" at the UPS office.

They didn't receive my check until Dec. 23, so given the holiday, I wouldn't expect 3-day turnaround.

And people wonder why I absolutely detest UPS. They are the aboslute worst company to ship anything valuable with. You are better off strapping you package to a homing pigeon than trust a valuable package with UPS.

The Good news. My personal check to Mastro was mailed on the 13th. I got my package on the 24th, which means that they didn't hold the check until it cleared.

The Not So Good News.

My UPS package from Mastro was left on the front doorstep, without obtaining the required signature. Considering the value of the package, the virtual impossibility of replacing the contents, and the fact that many collectors are frequently sent packages worth far more than mine, this is inexcusable.

As collectors, we are indirectly paying for a service we are not receiving. Mastro cannot control the actions of the individual drivers. Perhaps we need to insist on USPS delivery. The USPS takes the concept of required signatures seriously.

bruce: i may be wrong, but i think mastro did wait for you check to clear. the new check21 legislation provides for funds to clear real fast (24 hours?).

here a funny mastro story (real funny!).
the deadline to pay for the last auction was 12-27.....the funny thing (at least i thought it was funny) was the fact that they were closed for the holidays from 12-23 (at noon!) through 12-27, reopening on the 28th.
imagine my suprise when i called around 1pm on the 23rd to wire funds for the lot i had won!
why not have the funds due on the 28th? or dare i say work on the day funds are due?

kinda comical i thought

Mastro normally does not ship to me until I send them an email - then I get an email that evening or the next morning indicating that my item has been shpped. And no, I'm not clairvoyant.

ovrernight express. It happened to me once.

There're TOO MANY stories in this thread about UPS not asking for signatures....Mastro should try USPS or FedEx.

The funny thing is, I get stuff from UPS all the time where they guy DOES ask for my signature...if it's up to the delivery person, maybe Mastro isn't insuring stuff for enough (even relatively expensive stuff)?

UPS whipping boy, I'll try to explain this.....

There are instances where UPS will leave packages at your home (FedEx as well). Generally with UPS, it's when the value is $500 or below or if the shipper elects to send it that way.

Everything's pretty much electronic now-a-days and UPS (FedEx as well) have client shipping systems (UPS-Worldship and FedEx-Powership) that the shippers set up all the shipments in, including insurance and other items.

While I can't speak to how Mastronet sets up their shipments, I do know that they insure things outside of UPS (I think). It may have something with how they electronically set up their shipments whether UPS is releasing your shipments or not.

As for UPS releasing shipments, it's generally only done in neighborhoods that are deemed 'safe' neighborhoods. Called 'Driver Release', it is something that the VAST majority of customers want and UPS (and FedEx I'm sure) gets complaints on both sides of the fence.

What I would suggest is to call 1-866-PICK-UPS and file a complaint on the individual shipment. You will need the 18 digit 1Z tracking number from the shipment but if you don't ever want your driver to release your shipments, then tell them that.

The flip side is that they will make 3 delivery attempts (at an average cost to UPS of about $4.50 per stop) to attempt to deliver your package on 3 consecutive days. Then the package is held at the center for 7-10 days and then returned to the shipper.

The centers are also typically not the best located to go pick up packages at, so you will have to locate it and go get it if someone isn't home 3 days in a row.

As I have with other people on the board, ANYONE with specific UPS problems is always welcome to email me at my id above. I've been at UPS for 20 of my 38 years and am opening a UPS Store in March of 2005. Won't guarantee a positive resolution on EVERYTHING (sorry Tbob....), but I'll help aid whenever possible or find local phone numbers for anyone.

I won't profess to say we don't make mistakes, but with delivering 13-14 million packages a day (21-22 right now) there are probably thousands of problems daily, even at a 99.9% satisfaction rate.

I got my package yesterday when I got home from work. UPS left it sitting on my doorstep. Mine also had a "signature required" sticker.

If Tom is correct (and I am sure that he is) and it costs $4.50 every time for UPS to make a delivery attempt then it probably makes business sense to leave it at the door and assume the risk (especially in a nice neighborhood). If only 1 in 1,000 packages is lost, they would certainly come out ahead by paying the claim.

I just do not want to be that 1 in 1,000.

I won't waste my time getting a cashier's check for Mastro wins next time - it apparently makes no difference...just right a personal check and wait a month.

USPS positive: a customer didn't receive his card, I filed an insurance claim for $138, and received a check from USPS a few days ago...so it works. I filed about 3 wks after the shipment, received the check about 3-4 weeks after that.

My recent experiences with UPS have also been good - they always require a signature for Mastro packages, and if I'm not home they come back the next day and try again (and leave a note to that effect on my door).
