Default I need a Nap

Posted By: Rob D.

One of the whales blew me out of the water on a Domino Disc of Nap Lajoie last night on eBay. Figured it was worth a shot to see whether anyone has one available for purchase or trade. Doesn't matter if it's graded or raw. Also interested in other non-mainstream Lajoie cards/items that feature him with Cleveland.

Thanks, Rob

Hey Rob
I thought these pins were like $50 or something? What's up with this kind of price, is it normal and I have been missing something?

Well Mr. Deeppockets won it, I think when he wants something you can forget about it. But hard to explain the other bids that were in the ballpark.

Having collected the Domino Disc subset (HOFers only and there are a bunch!) I can tell you that Lajoie appears more infrequently than any of the HOFers. It is also very tough to get these discs in "rustless" condition, as they are very prone to rust and wear. Lajoie was the last one I found.
Good luck on finding one, I'm sure there are some more out there floating around and with the price that Nap brought, surely someone will free one up for sale.

Rob,

Don't forget that there are 2 different poses of Lajoie in the set (not taking into account the different colors). I have put together close to 2 sets and it seems the commons pop up a lot more frequently than the HOF'ers. Maybe because collectors hold on to the stars as types.

Mike,

Thanks for the info, not to mention the visual aid. I've not been pursuing a Lajoie for decades or anything like that, but I have kept my eyes open for the past two years or so and rarely have seen one offered (in either pose).

Leon,

Regarding value, I obviously thought it was worth more than $50 (I think the reserve was $350) but probably was way over the top with my final bid. I do think the fact is is slabbed in a PSA 8 holder had a lot to do with it, and I took that into account with my bidding despite the fact that the grade meant very little to me. My guess is if that same item is offered on eBay unslabbed, it would sell for less than $200. But what do I know? I don't even own one.

Rob

Rob,

I think you are pretty accurate with your price estimation if the Lajoie was ungraded. Maybe a little more because it was a nice one. What I have noticed is that the slabbed ones do much better even in mid grade VG and up. The ones in slabs NM and up get great prices especially HOF'ers.

Now here's where the potential issue lies. I have often thought about having my higher condition discs graded, particularly HOF'ers. I have many in similar condition like the Lajoie. So I decided I would win one on ebay and see in person what it would look like. I purchased a mid-grade disc for a nominal fee and when I received it, I noticed something that did not look quite right. It seemed as though the disc was forced(?) into the slab causing the metal rim to warp slightly so that if you busted it out and laid it on a table, it would not lay flat. It seemed as though the recessed area that the disc is supposed to lay into is slightly too small. It is the only one I have graded so I don't know if it was a fluke or if the holder has changed, but it is enough to make me keep mine ungraded for now.

I will keep my eyes out on one for you. I check e-bay all the time and go to all the Ft. Wash shows.

Mike,

I think you are dead-on in your observation about the Domino disks not fitting quite right in PSA's holders. I have only one, and it happens to be graded. More than once I've looked at it and thought that it isn't lying quite right (meaning flat) in the folder. Quite simply, I think the recessed area is too small to accomodate the size of the disk. Which is too bad, because I think they look kind of nice in the holders.

Prices for graded Domino Discs have been all over the place over the last year or so (at least higher graded ones). I sold my duplicate Home/Visiting Team disc last year on ebay ungraded, and it was really high grade for the issue (photo below). The buyer bought it raw for around $50-60 (and I was happy with the price by the way). A few months later The same card was sold by the seller in a PSA 8 holder and it cleared $400. Obviously he was happy, and I felt a little stupid as I had no idea this card was worth anywhere near that. I only paid $10 for the item, so I can't be upset but was surprised at the final price nonetheless.

I am not thrilled about the way these discs are graded by PSA. Discs that I grade as "vg" end up in PSA 6 and 7 holders. I have purchased discs in PSA 6 and 7 holders which, when I received them, I would grade them as g/vg to vg+. Either I am a tough grader on these coins or someone is getting some hellacious and unwarranted grades...
