Vintage Poster Questions Part 2

Hi-
Please see the full image below of the vintage (40s ish?) baseball poster I acquired (and posted about) around a month ago. I have finally managed to get a digital picture of it so I figured I would post again allowing folks to see the entire image. At the bottom is a design number and it was sold at an estate auction as a possible salesman sample. Now that everyone can view the entire image, I would greatly appreciate any information that could be provided. Has anyone seen anthing like this? Does any one have one with a game announcement printed below? Is my dating acurate (40s ish?). Again, any information you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. I also hope no one minds that I began a second thread about this piece. My old thread was already off the first page and the few scans I had were deleted (I need to use Photobucket).

I think it's earlier than 1940's- maybe 20's or 30's- and has very nice color graphics. Clearly some message was meant to be printed below, so salesman's sample seems plausible. But that's about all I can say about it. The batter looks familiar though, I wish I could place it.

I'm with you Barry. I've seen that before but can't place it...ugghh. I'm thinking I've seen it on a punchboard, notebook, or equipment package.

It was probably intended to be used as a bulletin to announce baseball games...you could write the teams, time and place down below.

My guess is around 1925-1935 and I've never seen them before. I agree with Dan that they were sent blank and dates and teams added later.

Isn't there an old baseball book with a cover that looks similar to that?? It looks familiar to me, too...

I shot an example of that poster at the 2005 National. It was in the booth of Ron Vitro, was asking $1,500.00 which doesn't seem like a lot for a world series broadside. You can read the little I wrote about it on the link below to page 3 of my 2005 National coverage. Since the series was played in St. Louis, Vitro's was apparently used there, or was intended to be used there, maybe never used it's in such good shape. Apparently the Cardnials had these on hand in case they won, then quickly printed up, and slapped on the pertinent venue details. Anyone else seen this printing scenario? -Carlton

Thank you very much to every one who responded! I too thought the image was familiar but I cannot place it. I love the picture you posted Carleton. I am very glad to hear it is older than I thought. Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

Did the games really start at 1:00 pm? I tried a quick search of TSN but couldn't find the starting times. I would have thought a later time.

No lights...and the sun goes down earlier in October. Really about the latest they could start a game that time of year would be about 3:00 PM and then hope the game doesn't go extra innings.
