Help w/ Cardinals Photo ID's
Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
I got the following photos as a throw in a lot with some other items I was interested in. Just wondering if anyone has any information as to who these players are. The photos are all roughly 8x10 in size and are all vintage to the time they were taken, and the backs are blank (no indication they were wire photos). Not sure if these photos picture people on the St. Louis Cardinals or perhaps a minor league affiliate. Any information would be appreciated. |

I think the 3rd pic is catcher Del Rice. The last pic looks very familiar but I can't say the name! Maybe pitcher Howie Pollett? |

Help w/ Cardinals Photo ID's

Thanks guys, assuming the 3rd one is Del Rice (it looks more like Del than Hal) it appears the photos all came from right around 1942-1945. I was thinking the first one looked like Warneke but thought he might have been a little too early, but he was there until 1942. Thanks for the help |

The guy on the left in the second pic is undoubdetly a young Walker Cooper. Beside him might be Johnny Hopp. The last pic may be the other Cooper, brother Mort. |

Jodi, I think Dennis pretty much nailed them. I don't think the 3rd one is Hal Rice though, I am leaning towards Del Rice on that one but I am pretty sure #1 is Warneke, #2 is the Cooper (wasn't so sure on Mort but after looking at some more pics, it is definately him), and #4 is Pollett. |

Hal "Hoot" Rice was another player who had a Campanella-like tragedy befall him. An accident of some sort occured in the 1950's which left him incapacitated for over 40 years, and thus unable to sign anything. There have been others over the years. I know of: |

I am almost certain the picture is Del. You can tell by the ears (Hal's ears are all wrong). The photo is from either 1945 or 1946 (based on being similar in age as the other photos in the group, and Del starting in 1945), so you would expect the guy to age a bit in about 9 years. Also the tip of the nose is a giveaway that it is Del. |

I could have sworn that I heard it happened around 1929, but it must have been 1930 then. I've owned two signatures in 20 years. They always sell well. |
