I'm in the processes of listing a couple of cabinet cards on ebay and wanted to see if anybody new if this cabinet of Manager Gus Schmelz is the same as the Old Judge N173 version of him. In, I believe, Lipset's book he mentions that the N173 is a portrait of Schmelz. This is obviously a portrait but I've never seen an Old Judge of him to know if this is the same. This came from the John "Pop" Corkhill estate (Hunt Auctions). Schmelz was his manager in 1887 and 1888 so I would believe this to be from one of those years. The photographer is Strauss of St. Louis and I know Goodwin & Co. outsourced many of their photographs. Any ideas? |

N173 Schmelz portrait is a different pose. Obviously, two player card is trimmed. |

the St. Louis studio that Goodwin used was Scholten. I have a number of the Louisville players cabinets on Scholten mounts. Also have seen a few of the St. Louis cabinets on the same mounts. |
