Personally, I think one of the best things to prevent this stuff is to have published in a widely popular magazine, like Tuff Stuff or Beckett, an article on common sense tips to avoiding baseball cards scams. I would hapilly write such an article, and it would involve easy tips and common sense stuff (buy a Beckett Almanac or Standard Catalog, recommended forums to ask questions, avoid Private auctions, how to differentiate between good and bad graders, etc).

The problem is that unless it was published in that type of magazine, it would mostly be read by people who already knowledgeable. I learned a lot about human beings when I published a small booklet on news service photographs. The people who were most likely to buy it were the ones who already knew the most about photographs. While the people who needed it the most, didn't buy it. Not only does this explain how the knowledgeable got to know so much, but that many beginners have to have advise shoved down their throats before they'll even notice it.

If any of those three contacted me, I will happily write such an article. I also know which side of my bread is buttered, and if Beckett contacts first I naturally will recommend the Beckett Almanac and if Tuff Stuff contacts first I will recommend the Standard Catalog.

If no one contacts me, I won't write it. It's as simple as that.

Some may notice my common technique to make it look as if I'm putting forth great effort. To do something, I put for extravagant conditions that more than likely won't be met. "If PSA moves to Seattle and gives me a big salary..." "If James Beckett calls me on the telephone in the next half hour..." "If Ichiro stops by gives me a game used bat, I'll will hapilly clean the bathrooms."

I may be in trouble if conditions are ever met, but considering I haven't had to scrub a toilet in at least five years I don't see the incentive to change my ways.

Seriously, though, I would write the article if contacted.

The private auction is a 2 edged sword, he is unable to see if there are knowledgeable vintage card buyers bidding on his garbage. I don't know if he can block bidders with no or low feedback, but that's not mentioned in the auction.
The reason I say to use 2 usernames is to keep the underbidder at a high level, which would thwart eagle8016 from offering his stuff to an underbidder. Viligante bid shielding to prevent fraud. Of course, this is all highly against ebay rules, not something I am doing, but hope is being done, given ebay's unwillingness to kick this guy off.

You only had inane little comment on 2 year old threads, contrasted to suggesting breaking rules for neautralizing a con man. Difference between people breaking rules to keep eagle8016 from getting paid $1000's for swindling people is that they are not commiting criminal acts.

I think the above poster is wrong about private auctions being a two edged sword. True the world of ebayers can not see who is bidding on an item but I believe the seller does get to see the names of the bidders. I have never used a private auction but I believe someone who did told me he knew the names of all the bidders, so I am assuming the seller, God and ebay are the three entities who get to see the names.

As the runner of exactly one private auction (and the card did not meet reserve) I can tell you that you COULD see the bidders.....this was about a year ago...I assume it is the same now.....regards
