Default Babe Ruth & Lous Gehrig Signed Menu

Lion Heart Autographs is auctioning an exceedingly rare and historically significant menu from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s 1928 dinner, held at New York’s famed Commodore Hotel, boldly signed by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Miller Huggins, Jacob Ruppert, Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock, and numerous other icons from the world of baseball and beyond.

Signed in pencil on the menu’s verso by 21 distinguished guests, this artifact brings together the principal architects of the legendary 1927–1928 New York Yankees—the team often referred to as "Murderers' Row"—fresh off their commanding World Series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals. With Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig anchoring the lineup, the 1928 Yankees cemented the team’s legacy as one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history.

A Dream Lineup of Signatures, Including:

• BABE RUTH – The immortal “Sultan of Swat,” whose fame transcended the sport and helped define the modern era of baseball. Ruth’s large, clear pencil signature remains bold and instantly recognizable.
• LOU GEHRIG – “The Iron Horse,” whose signature remains one of the most sought after in the hobby due to its scarcity and the poignancy of his career and early passing.
• MILLER HUGGINS – Legendary Yankee manager of the 1920s, whose autograph is increasingly elusive following his death just a year later in 1929.
• JACOB RUPPERT – Owner of the Yankees and visionary behind Yankee Stadium, famously known as “The House That Ruth Built.”
• WAITE HOYT – Hall of Fame pitcher, key to the Yankees’ early success.
• HERB PENNOCK – Hall of Fame left-hander with multiple World Series titles to his name.
• DUGAN, JOE – Yankee infielder known as “Jumping Joe” who played with the Yankees in five World Series.
• BUSH, “BULLET” JOE. Played for the Yankees 1922-1924.
• TRIS SPEAKER – Hall of Famer and record-holding center fielder with a lifetime batting average of .345.
• KENESAW MOUNTAIN LANDIS – Baseball’s first commissioner, responsible for restoring integrity to the game after the 1919 Black Sox scandal.
• ED SULLIVAN – Then a young sportswriter, later one of television’s most influential hosts.
• MAYOR JIMMY WALKER – NYC’s colorful and controversial mayor, a quintessential Jazz Age figure.
The menu also includes notable signers from the overlapping worlds of sports, journalism, Broadway, and politics—Bugs Baer, Eddie Collins, George M. Cohan, and others—painting a vivid portrait of the interconnected cultural elite of Roaring Twenties New York.
Highlights:
• Date: February 5, 1928 – mere months before the Yankees would launch into another championship season.
• Provenance: From a private collection and off the market for more than fifty years. At the bottom of the menu is a charming pencil cartoon by artist L.E. Schneider with a man holding a card reading, “How about signing?”
• Condition: Very good overall with light sunning; all autographs crisp, legible, and fresh.
