Default Grading 1964 Topps Standups / Sets Prevalent with Wax Stains?

Hey Everyone-

Got the opportunity to pick up a really nice partial set of '64 Stand-Ups. From the Front, you would think most of these are gorgeous, unpunched, and in the EX range (with some outliers); HOWEVER, it seems MOST are impacted by some sort of wax stains on the back.

I absolutely LOVE this set and its more than likely my favorite insert set of the '60s; that being said, my experience with these cards is pretty minimal, so minimal that I did not notice the "Prevalent Wax Stain" Issue in the set prior to digging with these (as I think there's a handful of slab candidates).

So, long story / question short, How do Third Party Graders (and me for Raw) grade these? I would assume them having Wax Stains more than likely puts them in the VG-EX Range, at best, despite how nice the rest of the card looks OR due to the staining being prevalent throughout the set, is it not considered "as much of a hit?"

I appreciate the help!

I have three PSA 8 ST and a PSA 7 ST 1964 Stand Ups, so to me the qualifiers were great (especially since the wax/gum residue is on the blank backs), because they reflected the 'actual' grades of the cards themselves.

Maybe reach out to PSA to see if they are still issuing stain qualifiers on those cards, or to SGC to ask how much a stain affects the number grade? Outside of that, I would imagine the (non-scientific) rule of thumb is to drop it two number grades from what it would otherwise deserve??

You referred to them as an insert set. They are not inserts. They sold in one cent (one card) and five cent wax packs I think. So any thing in a one cent wax pack will have a stain on the back and the bottom card of a 5 cent wax pack
I think psa should not label cards as ST because that’s the way they came out if the pack if that makes sense. I truely don’t mind a little dark brown stain on the back because the fronts are beautiful.. if grading I think you’re better off getting the higher number grade with the stain qualifier…. Just my opinion

Thank You! You kind of confirmed my assumptions, I don't grade much at all so completely forgot about qualifiers. Shooting an email to SGC but will probably just go the Raw route with these

I totally agree. Also did not know about these being a separate release; Makes so much more sense on why there's SO MUCH WAX on them!

Default 64 T stand ups

yea, interested area of gum stains

I completed my set many years ago...I will have to check and see if gum stains appear ( or settle) in a horizontal direction, Where the perf cut was made

Neat Stuff!

Looking at your wrapper & pack, I'm pretty positive they're wax stains from the wrapper (unless there was something else in there ensuring these didn't fold)

I have a couple of 7s and. 8s that had small stains so not sure if it matters much…

Be interested in a few if you are selling!

Well that gives me hope!

Yes, they'll eventually be available - I just am going to enjoy them for a few more days prior to deciding to Grade/List/Whatever's next!
