Default Favorite 'off the beaten path' Goudey '33 cards?

What are some of your favorite 'off the beaten path' Goudey '33 cards? Can still include HOFers and stars and the like. Would love to hear some of your favorites that are not as often mentioned as the ruths/gehrigs!

A HOFer, but maybe a lesser known HOFer, I'll go with the Chuck Klein. Nice full batting pose, with a sharp purplish-blue background.

I don't own one, and he's also a HOFer, but another favorite has always been the Carl Hubbell #230 card. It is very tough to find one with all the qualities of good registration, good centering, and minimal black print spots all over the yellow background. Have been searching for years... if anyone has one for sale, hit me up, but not if it belongs to your cousin or stepdad.

Charlie Root
Bill Heman
Paul Richards
Al Simmons
Hal Schumaker (#129)
Virgil Davis
Dale Alexander

From an aesthetic standpoint, the Paul Richards. From a personal standpoint, any cards that featured friends of mine.

Default Earl Clark

B. Earl Clark. Outfielder with the Boston Braves 1927-1933. 240 hits and 4 home runs in 8 MLB seasons. In 1929 he posted a .346 OBP with 43 runs scored in 303 plate appearances. He finished his career with the St. Louis Browns in 1934.

I only (at least mostly) collect pre-war cards featuring Washington Senators. But I have hung on to this exception. Earl Clark never played for the Washington Senators, although he played 8 seasons in MLB. But he was born in Washington and began his involvement with MLB as a batboy for the Senators. On top of that, his 1933 Goudey card features him playing for the Albany -- wait for it -- Senators. That's good enough for me. He also, apparently, was a fine soccer player, but I don't hold that against him.

Default Favorite 'off the beaten path' Goudey '33 cards?

As a Cubs fan, I had always wanted the Billy Herman RC. Finally made it happen earlier this year:

Some of my favorites include
Chick hafey
Tony lazzeri
Bill rogell
These cards might not be as flashy as the Ruths or Gehrigs, but they offer a unique glimpse into the careers of some of baseball's most talented players.

Point taken, but I believe Hafey is only in the ‘34 Goudey set.

Aesthetically I like all the ones with the royal blue backgrounds. Otherwise I like Eddie Moore as the only New Orleans Pelican in the set.

Nothing to add, but must note that there's an alarmingly high frequency of "Aesthetic" derivatives being used in this thread so far.

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

It's because aesthetic derivatives can be aesthetically pleasing.

Tony Lazzeri & Red Ruffing.

Had the 181 Ruth had a Yankee cap instead of the plain cap it would easily be my favorite Ruth.

I like the Bob O'Farrell with the sort of Art Deco looking background. I'm also partial to the full body images on Goudeys.

Another vote for Paul Richards. When I was a kid he managed the Orioles and I believe he wore a suit while doing so. Didn't look to me like he belonged around ballplayers - I was nine years old, what did I know? - so decades later when I acquired his Goudey card I saw him in a whole new light. Picking up his Worch card made it better yet.

My 1933 Goudey preference is also full body poses, followed by the 'half-bodied' cards like the Guy Bush shown. The O'Farrell card Andy showed should have made my list...dang it!
My least favorite are the cards with heavy outlining surrounding the player's image. In my mind they almost seem to belong to a different set.

A previous David posting of his Worch card was when I was introduced to the photo that was used by the Goudey artist to create the card. Thanks David!

Ahh, it's not so bad. I put together the '33 Goudeys about twenty years ago. Couldn't abide an empty puka in the binder - two thirty-nine out of two forty wasn't gonna cut it - so I ponied up for this bit of roadkill. No regrets.
