Default 1971 Topps - cameo/background

Has anyone put together a list of all of the "cameos" (guys in the background) of the action shots from the 1971 set? I see Thurman Munson on the Vada Pinson card. Is that Mike Shannon behind Gibson? Jerry Grote catching on the Joe Morgan? Who is the runner behind Joe Rudi? Who is the catching for Roy Smalley and Art Shamsky? There are others......

The Bob Gibson is most likely May 28, 1970, a day game at Shea and Mike Shannon played third base the whole game.

Someone probably has done the research on the 1971 Topps in action cards but I couldn't find anything on the internet. I noticed that all of the teams other than the Yankees and Mets can be traced to a single game. For example, the Cardinals Joe Torre, Dal Maxvill, Bob Gibson, and the Mets cards of Ken Boswell, Jerry Grote, Jim McAndrew (very likely) are from the May 28, 1970 day game at Shea Stadium. All of the in action cards of the Reds Lee May and Phillies Chris Short, Oscar Gamble, Deron Johnson are from the June 14, 1970 day game at Connie Mack Stadium.

In addition to Ryan there is Met second baseman Ken Boswell, 2nd base umpire Ken Burkhart, and the Astro stealing second base is either Jim Wynn or Joe Morgan, it looks like Wynn to me. Morgan and Wynn both stole second that game with no Astro getting caught stealing. The game was May 30, 1970, all of the in action Astros cards and quite a few of the in action Mets cards are from that game.

And the most famous one - the Chris Short card with the Hit King in the background.

And that is Chuck Dobson on the Munson card and he was safe on the play.

And one of the most hilarious cards (IMO) is the 1973 card of John Ellis arguing with an umpire. He has an airbrushed Indians uniform on but it was determined it was actually a Yankees - A's game and Sal Bando is on first.

Sorry no scans handy!

I believe Phillie Ron Stone is next to Lee May, Red Pete Rose is behind Chris Short, Yankee Curt Blefary is behind Joe Rudi, Met Al Weis is sliding under Del Maxvill, Cardinal Vic Davalillo is sliding into Ken Boswell, Astros catcher Johnny Edwards and home plate umpire Lee Weyer are behind Art Shamsky, Astros pitcher Larry Dierker putting on a warm up jacket is behind Jesus Alou, Mets catcher Jerry Grote and home plate umpire Lee Weyer are behind Joe Morgan, Cardinal on deck batter Joe Hague is behind Joe Torre, Mets catcher Duffy Dyer and not yet identified umpire are behind home plate on Ray Sadecki card, Yankees catcher Thurman Munson is behind George Spriggs, Mets catcher Jerry Grote is behind Norm Miller, Yankee Jerry Kenney is beside Merv Rettenmund, Yankees catcher Jake Gibbs is behind Rich Reese, Yankees catcher Thurman Munson is beside Vada Pinson, Cardinal Mike Shannon and third base umpire Andy Olsen are behind Bob Gibson.

I believe Angel third baseman Ken McMullen is behind Rudy May, White Sox catcher Duane Josephson and home plate umpire George Maloney are behind Ron Woods, Astros Denis Menke and Joe Morgan and umpire Ken Burkhart are beside Tommie Agee, A's catcher Frank Fernandez is behind Curt Blefary,

Thank you everyone! I knew there is a wealth of information in this group, but this is truly impressive (for non-T-206 backs, print scrap, etc.). At some point, we can move on to others. I like how Munson is in so many of these. Like the 1973 Terry Crowley card where Munson is in focus but Terry is not.

I've enjoyed the posts you've made in this thread. They remind me of content created by Vintage Card Curator on YouTube. In particular, his breakdown of the '73 Topps set is a stellar example of well-researched material.

Forgive me if you are Vintage Card Curator and I didn't know.

No, I just had some free time to compare the photos to 1970 day games at Shea Stadium and Yankees Stadium on Baseball Reference and I was wrong about all of the photos coming from single games in a series, the Ray Sadecki appears to be from the next day against the Astros after all of those other Astros and Mets in action cards from May 30 1970.
