I ran across this picture of Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Billy Williams heading for the dugout after a 'Mr. Cub' home run in (the caption reads) 1969...
bankssantowilliamshr.jpg ...and it got me thinking. That's a trio of Hall of Famers all scoring on a single home run (I assume there was no one else on base?). Every Cubbie involved in that play is now a HOFer. Are there any instances of a grand slam being hit (in a standard, non-All Star or whatever game) where all four of the involved players ended up being enshrined in Cooperstown?? Statistically speaking, I would imagine the Ruthian Yankees (with a parade of HOFers in the lineup) would've had the best shot of accomplishing this odd feat. Also, I don't know which pitcher Banks homered off of...but what if he was also a Hall of Famer?? That would send this off on another tangent, but I'm trying to avoid rabbit holes today.

This is pretty cool.
Just looked at Baseball Almanac and it looks like Lou Gehrig hit one off Ted Lyons that scored Ruth, Combs and maybe Pennock. He also hit one off Lefty Grove that scored Joe Sewell and Ruth. |

Who were they playing? This opens up a new question: What single play (there undoubtedly must be multiple examples of the occurrence) featured the most HOFers on the field at the same time? The most the batting team could offer is four, but then add to that number the HOFers playing in the field...uh oh, rabbit hole ahead...and we could also include umpires and on-field coaches, too, but let's not.

Yogi hit his GS against Detroit, which had only 1 HOFer in the field--George Kell.
The first four you mentioned were on the field when Tony Lazzeri hit a three-run shot scoring Ruth & Gehrig April 21, 1927-- so 7 HOFers in on the play. Wheat pinch hit for the A's and Hoyt & Combs also played for the Yankees that day.

Ernie also could have hit that one off of Dick Kelley on May 13, 1969 in a 19-0 romp over the expansion Padres. The long sleeves and the crowd apparel might point to a game from early in the season.

You’re right, I missed that one and you are correct it’s almost certainly that one because of the date. All three happened in the bottom of the first inning.

After checking game logs and play-by-plays listed on BBR, I found that this occurred on May 7, 1927. Going into the 9th Inning, the Yankees led the White Sox 2-0; New York would plate 6 in the inning, only two of which were earned due to two errors prior to Gehrig's slam, which scored Combs, Koenig and Ruth. Ruth had reached on a fielder's choice and Pennock scored. So, three HOFers scored on the homerun hit off a fourth HOFer, Ted Lyons. And, of course, that happened with the homer against Grove too. Additional Note from the play-by-play: Pennock finished up the game in the bottom of the ninth, but not before one Alex Metzler singled and advanced to second and then third base on DEFENSIVE INDIFFERENCE! Current terminology describing long ago events. .

How often does someone get to third on defensive indifference?
If the game is close indifference 2nd to 3rd is unlikely. If it's a blowout why bother moving up to third? |
