Default Monster Slain!!!!

Well at least my version of slaying the Monster. Thanks to fellow board member Pete Sycks, I obtained the final card needed to wrap up this 2+ year project...the Green Cobb.

I say my version because I decided to stop at 518. The big 4 are just unattainable at this time and I'm not terribly motivated to pay the money needed for Demmitt and O'Hara when the almost identical cards already reside in my set.

I have a little over 100 cards graded (mostly HOF'ers) with an average grade of 2 and the rest are in my binder and average Fair condition. So excited to have completed the set...maybe I'll change my mind on the Demmitt and O'Hara, but for now I'm on to the T205's...25% done with that already!!!

Thanks to all of my fellow board members who helped with this journey! Probably bought at least 20+% of the set from you guys!

Great community!

Cheers!

JT

Congratulations!

Do you have a favorite card from the set or one that has a special story for you?

JT congrats on slaying the Monster !!! Nice green Cobb to finish it off with!

What would you guesstimate your set would do if it were to be auctioned off at 518 ?

I do...but not just one...a collection.

I got started because a guy I used to play softball with reached out to the guy who runs the league (who used to be a card shop owner in the 80's...got all of that so far???) and asked if he knew anyone who would be interested in his deceased Uncle's collection from when he was a kid. The guy who runs the league pointed him in my direction. He was excited because he had a couple of Mantle cards...

But when we met he had a tin can of 105 T206's cards, and my jaw dropped. I could barely contain my excitement!

The guy with the collection was thrilled because I told him I wouldn't buy them for the price he was asking....I would pay him 2.5 times the asking price!!! I didn't want a reputation for taking advantage of anyone.

At the time I didn't have any T206 cards in my collection but always admired them. Below are pics of the collection, with the highlights being the Johnson Portrait, Red Cobb, and 3 Cy Youngs among many more....it totally jumpstarted the desire to bring the Monster down.

Pics below

P.S. Never bought any of the Mantle cards...lol...had all of them already and didn't have the money to buy them after the T206 purchase anyway...

Green Cobb is wicked! Congrats!

I had a buddy up here in Canada offer me his PSA 5 green Cobb, but as much as I liked it, I had to pass because I'm totally clueless when it comes to these cards! There are the Sweet Caps, Piedmonts, Hindus, Turks, Punjabis, Scandinavians, etc. And then there is the 150 subjects, 350, 350-450, 451-666, etc. Way too confusing!

Thanks Leon! I was the winner of more than a few of those auctions you had from "A gentleman" about a year and a half ago.

Working on the T205 Gold Border set now...Have all but 5 HOF'ers and a few of the scarce cards....getting the commons last. Have 49 total so far...long way to go to get to 221.

I would hope around $70k...but it really doesn't matter to me...I love the set and hope to enjoy it for a very long time. Certainly no plans to sell.

Johnny,

If you did this in less than 3 years, that's pretty impressive. Congratulations on that accomplishment.

That nice Cobb is actually a T202 end panel that has been separated from the rest of its card. T202 end panels share the same artwork as seen in the T205 set, but have white borders versus gold, and are slightly smaller in overall dimensions.

Thank you all for the kind words!!! And yes, that is an end panel from a T202 Hassan Triple folder. Still have it...don't really know what to do with it.

Sell it...the panel appears to be in fairly nice shape, and Cobb examples go for multiple hundreds of dollars, especially on Ebay as an auction. Should give you some money towards your T205 pursuits.

Brian (and if it hasn't been mentioned previously, congrats on completing your personal T206 collecting challenge)

Congrats!

Also - I think that green Cobb looks awesome! The wear and creasing of some cards can have an undefinable rightness to it - to my mind that Cobb has that quality.

518 is a pretty reasonable number, IMO. I have the same plan. Congrats on reaching the peak!
