I could read stories like this all day long! Thanks for sharing. So many opportunities for this card to have wound up in the landfill forever lost to the collectors who are now going to pay up for it on ebay! Not sure Ebay is the best route however

I don't have any use for it. It's not centered enough nor do I see any creases. I'm out.

That’s a fantastic baseball card. How high will it go? How quickly after eBay will it be consigned to REA/Memory Lane/Heritage/LOTG?

Fantastic article, and I might add that I'm glad there was an honest, local card shop they took it to. Now maybe all parties can make a little money.

About eight years earlier, after his father downsized and moved out of his home, Mitch, his brother and his sister-in-law began going through the house.

You mean after his kids kicked him out of HIS home and then stole all HIS belongings?

It's definitely not! The buyer will just send it to Goldin next year and double his money.

That "3" seems like a harsh grade to me.

What causes this to be demoted to a 3. That may be the nicest 3 in existence.

Wow, this is the only example known to exist? Anyone else know of another, perhaps in an old timer's collection?

Nice story; thanks for sharing.

Was this Joe out of the blue, or was there any inkling that one may have existed?

I guess if there was more than one of them in existence you could buy it, crack it out, and get it regraded. Do you think PSA will remember they already graded it a 3?

I don't get all the excitement about this find. Heck, there are many 1917 Standard Biscuit cards of which only one is known to exist per the pop reports, including this rookie card of this HOFer, which surely should be worth more than the card of a disgraced Black Soxer!

Look closely at his name. Something going on there perhaps?

His name appears like that in the other 1917s I have seen:

If I were to guess I would say there is a minor bend in the card that can be seen if you hold it at an angle--maybe not so much now that it is slabbed. These cards were printed on thin stock and are prone to such bends, which don't rise to the level of a crease or even a wrinkle but are noticeable in hand.

Regardless, I can't see why you would regrade this beauty, it's not like several others are coming along. I suppose a Joe Jackson player card registry guy might want to better his over all avg, but I don't see the price being enhanced too much with a one or two grade bump. Then again, those who worship at the altar of the slab may feel differently.

Great story, fantastic card. Wish it was in an SGC slab. That red and white label is so distracting to a great vintage card.

Val, why do you keep posting pictures of my card????

That beautiful Sam Rice got away from me and you keep rubbing it in. That's cold, Val.

Peter, if you look at the awesome 1917 Boston Store Jeff K has for sale in BST it has the same defect. I don't think there's any question that the 1917 sets were all printed by the same printer and just stamped with different backs.

George, thanks for the kind words,

Jim, I'm sorry (NOT!) that the SB card of Sam Rice got away from you. But, if you go after and win this newly-discovered SB card of Joe Jax, you'll forget all about the Sam Rice card!
