Default Anybody ever heard of Midget Smith?

I'm looking for any Midget Smith memorabilia either for sale or just a picture of front and back to add to my geneaology tree. William Joseph "Midget" Smith is a 1st cousin (3x removed) of mine and I'm in the process of writing a book about his life. I also collect his stuff since its kind of obscure and realitvely inexpensive since not many collect his stuff. I'm also looking for pics of Midget with his sister "Vera Smith". Shes a badass and was Midgets trainer for awhile. I believe she was considered one of the first female "trainers".

Welcome to net54.

Did he play a sport?

Which one?

When?

Good luck with your book.

Doug

Hey Doug! William Joseph "Midget" Smith was a american boxer from 1917-1927. From 1917-1919 he fought in Panama during his stint with armeed forces (WW1). He came back to America in 1920 and his best years were between 1921-1923. He found Kid Williams, Young Montreal, Joe Burman, Joe Lynch, Pete Herman, Pal Moore, Jackie Sharkey, Mickey Delmont, Johnny Buff, Phil Franchini, etc. He was good pals with Jack Dempsey too. Dempsey and Midget sparred with eachother often and Jack is the only person to ever knockout Midget (and it was during a sparring match). Imagine those two in the ring! A bantamweight vs a Heavyweight!! David vs Goliath. lol. Midget retired in 1927 and ended going back to the military for WW2. He died in 1966. I agree, cool history and pretty cool stuff.

I'm betting Adam Warshaw will have some interesting comments when he notices this thread.
