Default Angel Hernandez is retiring as an MLB umpire

I just saw a report that Angel Hernandez is retiring as an MLB umpire. If true, he won't be missed.

Thank god and good riddance, the umpires union old boy network should be dismantled, they've proven they have no interest in self governance.

Glad to hear it - interesting that MLB had to negotiate a settlement with him .
Forced retirement ?

With Angel and Joe West gone, who takes over the title of worst MLB ump? CB Bucknor?

It turns out that members of Angel Hernandez's family have been reaching out to him by phone for years trying to convince him to retire, but he always missed the call.

First ballot selection to the hall of freaking shame.

END OF AN ERROR!

Amen to that.

Joe West got less than 5 votes last year on the Hall of Fame committee ballot. Hard to see Angel Hernandez doing better.

Him and Bucknor are probably both good choices. The only good thing is they don't seem to have the same attitude that Hernandez (and West) both had. I'm not sure if any other umpires do.

I wonder when MLB will just do what has been happening in the minors - implementing AI for the ball and strike calls. If MLB truly wants to add more excitement to the offensive side of the game, then that is the way to go. Now and then, an MLB ump will call a strike a ball, but for each one of those types of calls, there are about nine calls saying that a ball is a strike.

The minor league game I went to recently had an interesting thing, each team allowed three challenges on ball/strike calls. There were two over two games. Not much of a disruption. Both calls upheld on review.

It seemed ok, but part of me is against removing the human element.

Angel Hernandez has got to be SO HUMILIATED. This man may be the LEASTrespected retiree in sports history. He will never be able to show his face at any baseball related event. My only question was whether he was inept or corrupt?

Why would he be humiliated? He has beat the MLB at every turn and is both inept and corrupt. In any logical world he would have been fired years ago but has a long history of frivolous lawsuits and headline grabbing accusations with no merit but draw negative attention to the league. He has hustled them for years and now essentially blackmailed them into a buyout for one of the worst umpires in league history simply because they know they have no other choice to avoid another meritless lawsuit to draw bad press. Hernandez should be ashamed, but I bet he is laughing knowing he worked the system again.

+1
His personality didn’t allow humility or shame - Probably part of the reason he was so terrible
