Any idea why Johnny Mize doesn't have a 1938 Goudey or any Play Ball cards?

Seems really odd with how good he was at the time. Led the NL in HRs in 1939 and 1940.

Presumably because 1) Mize did not sign a contract with them and 2) he was a litigious fellow. He is said to have sued Gum Products, Inc. over the Double Play series in 1941 and put an end to the product from the court costs. I have not seen a primary source record of the case, only secondary claims but I don't follow the 40's issues really.

Thank you, I will look up the original articles, nice to see several of them already found and cited. Seems to me your friends article mostly confirms the general story that has floated around for a long time, except for perhaps the bit about Mize's losing lawsuit leading to expenses that caused Gum Products to cease making cards. Seems like with this speedy resolution it likely cost them very little and the war paper issues might be a more likely candidate for the lack of a follow up. Really interesting piece outside of this specific suit too

I don't have any Mize cards in my collection and, frankly, don't want any. Likewise Terry Moore. Not a fan of Solly Hemus or Enos Slaughter either. You can keep that whole era of Cardinals for the most part, as far as I'm concerned.

We had a great time together, a really great guy. He invited me to his home in Georgia, if I was
in the area. In 1986, I was driving down to Florida, and did visit with Johnny at his home.
really great experience.

Johnny was the first all-time great I ever met. He and a few other Hall of Famers were signing at a show, and his autograph on an 8x10 was either free or a dollar with admission. Heckuva a thrill for an 11-year-old kid.

Met Mize & Slaughter as a kid. Slaughter was kind, jovial and brimming with personality. Mize was kind and as quiet as Slaughter was talkative. The most immense hand I've ever shaken, yet it was soft. Silly things you remember from childhood.

1952 World Series......I remember Casey Stengel bringing in Johnny Mize to pinch-hit. And, Johnny won the game hitting a HR. During this Series, Johnny hit 2 more HR's
to win it for the Yankees. And, would have had a 4th HR, if Carl Furillo had not reached into the Right-Field stands to catch the ball.

Needless to say, Johnny was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award in the 1952 World Series.

Johnny was one of the most friendliest Major League ballplayers that I have ever met.
