I have a friend that bought a collection, within the collection there are multiple Ruth, Cobb etc cards. I'm 100% certain these are fakes made to look like they have aged. He's been told they are authentic by card store owners?? Can you please state you opinion on the authenticity of these and why?

For the “why”, anytime you see that crackling effect it means someone has used a brown liquid like tea or coffee to give the appearance of aging/toning.
The Wagner is just it’s own thing that’s bright white with sharp corners that you wouldn’t see on a card like that and the printing looks terrible. The Cobb has the crackling and the perimeter wear just isn’t honest, card perimeters don’t wear like that over the course of 100 years. That kind of wear happens over the course of 5 minutes.

I hope they at least baked a good casserole in the oven, along with the cards.

The m101 reprints like the Wagner have been identified and discussed many times over the years. When there is a noticeable space between the end/edge of the photo and the square box that frames it, it is a reprint-- a cropped photo of the original.

“Store Owners” ….. often cited as the source of prior multi thousand dollar offers when card is presented to a reputable dealer at a show…… with asking price much lower… LOL

Agree with the posts, very bad reprints.
I have seen this happen often with these modern card shops as they are honestly unknowing in anything other than ultra modern and TPG Pokémon cards. Any and all general card shop opinions to me are as useful as an icemaker at the artic circle.

Your friend should sell them to the card shop owner who insists they are real…

Your friend needs to get and use a black light... those cards are reprints, on modern paper, the brighteners used in making the paper will fluoresce. Those cards will glow.
All of what was said above rings true. Also, there's the centering... they're reprints. The buying and selling of such cards, when there's a suggestion that they're real, sours people new to the hobby, and potentially sours them to the point that they abandon the hobby. The prices on old cards go up as a function of an increase in the number of collectors and an increase in how much money those collectors have available for buying cards. The scammers hurt themselves in the long run. |
