Dutch Revelle

Not alot to look up on Dutch. He started in 1906 with the Portsmouth Truckers and finished in 1913 with the Portsmouth Pirates. After his first season with the Truckers he went to the Richmond Colts and had his best years-1908 he was 26-12 and in 1909 he was 29 -11.
He is one of the 48 Southern League players that made the t206 set he is also in T210 Old Mill and e222 AWH Caramels.

Dutch can be found with 3 different tobacco ads in the 206 set 1. Hindu 2. Old Mill south and 3, Piedmont. Dutch can also be found brown Old Mill south and a blank back along with the T210 series 2 Old Mill. I don't own the AWH.

Dutch would pitch well in spring training, there would be talk of him going North with a major league team, then he'd stay in the minors. Somewhere I have a copy of a page from a kid's set of scrapbooks from the time, the kid saved clippings on all of the teams, there's a clipping about Dutch in it, as I recall... And you remain most welcome, Jim!!! He's in a good home.

Frank: I searched the NYT archives and got two hits for Dutch Revelle. Seems he got a look from the Highlanders in 1911.

This kid lived in New York, his clippings' scrapbooks on the Highlanders, Giants, and Trolleydodgers were the thickest/best. You have me motivated to dig around for it... I can't Google the boxes and piles that surround me as well as it works on the internet. I haven't seen it in about 15 years; I'll have to dig deep.

Dutch had his contract picked up by the Highlanders three times that I am aware of 1908, 1909, and 1910.

Of the few H801-7 cabinets I once had, Revelle was one of them. So, it would round-out your fine collection.

But, I don't have a scan of it....sold it before I was scanning BB cards.

Here's a little info on Dutch:

Robert H. Revelle
B. 1882, Virginia.

In 1910 he was living in Tanner Creek, VA, at his in-laws with his wife and two boys. By 1920, the family was living on their own. Dutch was working as a pipe fitter in a Navy Yard in Norfolk, VA. He passed away prior to 1936, as his widow Grace is listed as such in Norfolk city directories from that period, extending into the 1940's. She lived at 208 East 27th St. in Norfolk. The house appears to be torn down, replaced now by a grassy area which extends for the area of a city block.

The youngest son, Castellaine, worked as a bricklayer in Norfolk. Born on Feb. 22, 1908, he died in Norfolk on May 22, 1989.

Dutch's eldest son, Granville, was born on Oct. 13, 1905 in Nevada and passed away in June of 1985 in Norfolk. He worked as an attendant for the Master Auto Service Corporation, and also worked as a bricklayer for Snow & King. He travelled a fair amount by ship, with recorded trips to Bordeaux, France, Liverpool, England and Sondre Stomfjord, Sweden. He also sailed to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1941. Oddly, Granville's house has also been razed.

notice how clear the last two cards are compared to the first three. The registration/focus is much better on the last two cards-brown Old Mill & blank.
These seem to be printed first. You can tell the plate had been used many times by the first three cards.

With the help of David McDonald I have been able to get in touch with Dutch's grandson. During our correspondence he mentioned that Dutch died in 1928. That helped me obtain a copy of his death certificate and find the article below detailing his untimely death.

While doing some research at the Virginia Historical Society I came across catalog numbers for glass plate negatives in the Walter Washington Foster Collection for several Richmond Colt players including Dutch Revelle from 1908. I filled out the necessary paperwork and requested a scan and the T206 image was sent to me along with two other similar portraits of Revelle in street clothes. The VHS added them to their site as well.

I am Robert H.("Dutch) Revells' grandson. He was born in Portsmouth Va. 22Jan1881, Died 6March1928 from injuries due to a fall at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was living in Norfolk at that time, but I do believe that NNSY was, and still is in Portsmouth Va. There is a reference to Tanners Creek in a previous thread...Tanners Creek was just a Census district which included (what then was) outlying areas of Norfolk City. My father was Granville Edward Revelle (also went by "Dutch) Born in Norfolk City, Va. (not Nevada!) on 3 October 1905, Died 18Jan 1985 in Norfolk City Va. I have numerous Newspaper articles photos of teams and other memorabilia relating to Robert H. Revelle...Just to mention: The Revelles of Dutchs' time rarely used the last "e" in Revelle. The Revell families of Portsmouth (there were actually 2 lines) were direct decendants of Randall Revell ca1630 from Somerset Co. Maryland. Write for any further info, I live in Lynch Staion, Va. Hi...Yes I have one that was given to me by my father...I am not very knowledgable on that subject, but I would say that it's not in great condition....It is the red border card with the Old Mill Cigarettes ad on the reverse side. His name may be spelled Revell on this card, but I will have to check that...It is in a safe at my sons' house!!! Lou Revelle

Welcome to the Net54baseball forum. The Red Border card you have is classified as T210 Old Mill, in the hobby. There is one pictured above in this thread and the last name does have the e on it. Thanks for sharing your information too. best regards

Thanks for all of the kind words guys....As I mentioned I am a mere novice to sports cards, but I do find the hobby fascinating.....I have a Norfolk Newspaper article regarding "Dutch" dated ca. 1908 showing Dutch in a pitching stance and declaring him "Best Pitcher in the Virginia League". I believe the title was a result of some sort of popularity contest in a Richmond newspaper, in which readers cast votes for their favorite Va. League player. That newspaper contest affirms my Dads' recollections that Robert H. was known to many as "Smiling Dutch Revelle". The Norfolk Newspaper article also spells the name as Dutch Revell (without the last "e"). I also have an original photo (5x7) of a mysterious baseball team which includes Dutch as a player......No inscriptions or title except for the shirts, which appear to have "White Rock" or something like that on them. (It's hard to make out.) I will scan all of this and attempt to post it for all to see once I figure out how to attach photos to this site.....(remeber I am old and, technologically, still living in the last millenium !!!!!!) Lou said it would be ok to post this and gives another glimpse of Dutch....It is part of an email string we had several days back....



. I am going to scan that photo and a newspaper article (original) from ca1903 where Dutch was proclaimed as "Best Pitcher in the Virginia League". I also have several other family photos showing Dutch, one which may be Dutch as a child, taken in a Portsmouth Photography studio, although I am not entirely sure of that one. My uncle (Castallaine Revelle) is said to have had an old bat, glove and signed ball, from Dutch, but he never got along with my dad, and I never saw this memorabilia. Reportedly when he (Castallaine) died (1989) these items were carried over to his wife who moved to North Carolina (with her family) shortly afterward (they had no children). I remember, as a child ca1949-50, my dad and all the aunts and uncles would walk from their home on 27th st. in Norfolk to a ball field which was near the R.R. tracks on Church St. I don't remember the name of the field...it later became a farmers' market. I believe the home team was the Norfolk "Tars" but I'm not sure......Dutch Revelle had a great impact on that generation of my family. They admired the man, even years after his death. My father (Granville) always had people call hisself "Dutch". As a child I thought that was my dads' real name!!!!!! My dad played some baseball also...mostly with leagues associated with the Merchant Marines, and he was pretty good until he fractured his finger....then his ball playing ended....My dad wanted me to play baseball in the worst kind of way, but I had no interest. When I went out for little league trials and they hit a flyball to me, I had never seen a ball hit so high, and I could not find it. The little league people thanked my dad for bringing me out and that was the end of my B.B. career!!!!!!! I ended up being a swimmer in high school. Until the day he died my dad religiously watched ball games on t.v. He once told me that losing his dad in that shipyard accident was something he never good overcome....Dutch must have been quite a guy....I regret never having had a chance to meet him.

Thanks for sharing those articles...I have never seen them before. I did not mention this previously, but Dutchs' wife Grace Tunstall Hewitt Revell(e)(my praternal grandmother) lived until Nov. of 1956. I was 11 years old at the time of her death, and she was the person who would walk me to the Norfolk field on Church St. to see the Norfolk team play. She was a wonderful person and always made me promise I would tryout for baseball (and I did!!!!).
The status on my photos is that with all the damage caused by the windstorm last Friday, I have not had a chance to scan the few photos that I have. (Wal Mart was without power for several days....this induced a major panic to people of the Altavista Va. area...But I hope to get that done this week......I will need help in posting, and it has been offered.
