New to forum, so I hope this is posted correctly.
I've acquired a box of press photos, mostly 1940s-50s baseball, from the estate of an AP sports reporter (worked there from 1943-71) who died in the mid-1990s. Quite a few have dated captions/releases pasted on the back and stamped with AP Newsphoto (not Wirephoto) stamp, and are clearly proper photos from negatives. Are these necessarily considered to be Type I? I'm trying to determine whether or not the better ones are worth sending to PSA. It seems that the photos that command significant premiums of any kind are all slabbed. I'd be grateful for any recommendations. |

I have no advice on slabbing. I personally haven’t seen the need to do so. Nonetheless those are beautiful photos. For what it’s worth they look like type 1s to me. If you have any 1971 Pirates for sale I’d be very interested.

Welcome to net54.
FWIW, I agree with Mike, not a slabber myself, but beautiful collectible images indeed. I would be interested in seeing photos relate to no-hitters and would be a likely buyer. |

These are really nice and if you ended up getting them - then great find!
PSA does have a service for photos, anything Jackie Robinson or other major stars would be worth at least a look to slab. I collect boxing photos as well and press and wire photos have been getting harder to find outside online auctions - you will find some these to be Type I or Type II and so on - really depends on the image and what info is on the back. Good luck!

Personally I like slabbing valuable photos, as it keeps me from accidentially doing damage when handling or showing to others. And I like how they look in the PSA slabs. However, you can get it verified by PSA but not slabbed. Some will be quick to point out that slabbing it is a lousy way to preseve the photo for the next couple of hundred years and that museums and the baseball HOF don't recommend it. So be it. I'll take the risk.
