Suspicious Mantle 1976 Shakey Pizza

Anyone have the 1976 Shakey’s Pizza Mickey Mantle #145…?

It “appears” as though every Mantle I can find has a shield with pinkish fill and the “World’s Greatest Pizza” is almost illegible.

Every other card in the set that I search has a dark maroon fill with a clearly legible “Worlds Greatest Pizza”


Another counterfeit….? Of a $20 card…..?

I thought you were saying that. Are you saying all Mantles have poorly defined number boxes like yours? I don't know. I'm just saying Jim Beckett wouldn't be selling fakes via COMC.

As this is one of my favorite food sets from the 70s, I pieced my complete set together from several other complete sets for the best condition, centering, etc.

Several of the cards in my set have lighter red ink on the back like your Mantle and several other cards had partial obscuration the "WGP" text, just not to the level of your Mantle.

I don't feel, based on your image, your card is fake...just a factory PD.

I can’t find another card like this one in the set. I searched a good number of the other cards on ebay and only the odd Mantle turned up. Searched through a good number of ads. All had the correct colored ink and readable shield.

The PSA graded of this card I could find are all of the correct colored shield too.

This started me thinking on the 83’ Topps Mantle counterfeit mess and I began to question authenticity.

Those 83’s flew under the radar for a long time before being noticed. When the only card with the flaw is the most valuable card in the set it makes me think fake.

I have the remaining stock of this set from the original producer of these and can check later to see what the mantles look like if you want. I have several sets still in factory fresh form.
