Well, my max $800 bid didn’t quite get the job done…

What’s going on here? I don’t know a ton about Old Mills. Why did it go for almost ten times your max bid. Was it a rare-colored Old Mill?

I believe there are only two graded by PSA, and none by SGC. So it's a rare one for sure.

There were really only 2 bidders above the $1,700 mark. And they both bid right at the end of the auction, probably using snipe services.
Could just be a simple case where two bidders really wanted it, and typed in a crazy high number to make sure that they got it. And in the end, one of them typed in a number larger than the other, so got it. Of course, with that strategy, sometimes the winner might end up paying a lot more than they really wanted to, and so the price can end up being a bit inflated. Hopefully they actually pay up now!

There are 4 reasons why this went so high: (1) someone doing an old mill subset, (2) someone doing a player back run, (3) someone trying to put together a master set, or (4) someone who collects super rare cards or t206 front/back combos |

It went from $650 to almost 8k in one minute, wild. The underbidder definitely thought they had it at that price.

But who puts 8k as a snipe bid on this card?

A couple of bidders who want it real bad.
And neither one really expects someone else to be crazy enough to do the same thing on the same card. Next thing you know, it's $8k, and someone gets to pay for wanting it bad enough to just type in a ludicrous number in their snipe engine.

I think some of the recent Tolstoi results demonstrate that there are some deep pockets chasing these low-pop “common” cards.
I had to talk myself into an $800 ceiling for this card, but I pretty much assumed from the outset that it would reach low four figures. I did not see $7.7K coming. I imagine Greg Morris didn’t see it coming either… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by inceptus; 02-04-2023 at 11:36 AM. |

It is amazing how much a T206 with a rare front back combo will fetch when 2 feverish, deep-pocket collectors get locked into a Mortal Kombat duel.
I know this feeling first hand in my quest for a T206 McGraw back run. A opportunity arose for a JM with an Old Mill back, of which there are very few. Fortunately for me, the seller was a stalwart here on the board. Expensive yes, but worth it to me. Of course, I dream of Ted Z's Uzit, which I am sure is one of a kind. But projects for guys like us just fuels our love of pre-war. |

Bid number 3 was $1,688.66. That seems more indicative of real value.

That was my bid or the bid I was trying to enter manually with two seconds but it like blew up and I didn't even think it took.

Personally, it hurts a lot less when I lose a tough item by a huge gap like this. When it’s a single bid up (or less), it stings. let’s see if the buyer pays, this might be up for sale again soon.

If two people wanted it that bad then an assumption is that IF another card (same condition) comes up, then the bidding on that one will probably be in the neighborhood of the max bid by the second under bidder (about $1700).
Looks like about 6 people interested in it at the $1K level (or more). There seem to be a lot of serious back collectors.

Winner was over 500, underbidder was over 6,000.
In the thread "low population" was mentioned as the probable reason for the high bids. An assumption is that there must be some type of reference guide that provides T206 populations based on backs. Can someone provide a link to that resource. If it's PSA (or any TPG) pop report, then those have got to be a bit unreliable because I don't think PSA (or other TPG) registered T206 backs for years and I don't know if they do so on a standardized basis now. You would hope they started to do that at some point in time. https://www.ebay.com/itm/13442337854...1&toolid=20001

Please excuse my ignorance as I’m still new to t206, but what is so special about this card that it brings such crazy numbers?
