Naive Question: If I sent this card in for grading, what would they give me?
An altered or authentic, or refuse to grade or what can I expect? Hopefully, the 5-year old (?) left baseball card collecting in favor of a shorter career in art. Since the drawing on the back seems to be in pencil, should I erase it before submitting? Thanks for your time... |

It will probably get a "1", but in my opinion (probably like others), cards that have a coupon removed should be rated "A" because technically, they are trimmed cards. It's mind boggling how the TPGs continue to assign numerical grades to cards that have been cut/trimmed after initially being distributed.
Edited to add - I wouldn't remove/erase the picture, it gives it a little more character.

Authentic if they deem the cards minimum size not met due to coupon being taken off and clipping his foot. Best case a 1, good luck

From the scan the drawing actually looks to be in pen. No help on the grading question, but in my opinion the drawing adds to the appeal.
So I would vote no on erasing, even if it is in pencil. But also consider the source of this opinion. Brian (scribbles on blank backs is my thing) Last edited by brianp-beme; 01-15-2023 at 01:27 AM. |

SGC 1 IMO. When it comes to Zeenuts TPGs delineate between cards that were produced with a coupon to be removed and trimming.

If I was to send it in? It would probably come back ungraded.
So you have a much better chance of getting a grade “A” or probably a 1. Good Luck

It will get a 1 (or possibly an A because of the ripped portion, they aren’t consistent with that.)
No reason Zeenuts should not be given a numerical grade. If a Bazooka, Post Cereal, Jello, or Hostess card can get a numerical grade having had all 4 edges trimmed (as intended) then Zeenut cards should be graded as well. They should specify, however, that it is without the coupon. I like the artwork on the back! A rare glimpse into the life of a young child in 1913! ![]()

Also want to add that IMO the Zeenut series is akin to the N172 Old Judge series due to size and breadth of the set. Most collectors I know of the series (myself included) are far more interested in “eye appeal” than technical grades. I would take a clean front example with writing or damage to the otherwise usually blank back over a card with creasing or heavy wear to the front image despite the probable lower technical grade of the card with writing/damage.
My collection of Zee’s now numbers north of 3,000 cards and the reality of having that many graded cards from one series would necessitate a new wing on my house… thus (for me) ungraded is preferable. I am sure that sentiment will be lost over the years, however.

![]() Quote:
They should just grade them and put a numerical grade and the tagline with coupon or without coupon. And if someone really wants to do a registry thing with them, maybe they only count ones with a coupon? I think the card in question in the first post, would probably receive a 1. Maybe an AUT... .

Just realized that I do have a slabbed Zeenut masterpiece, a 1925 Jim Bagby graded SGC 1 by the art community. Perhaps someday I will remove it from its slabbing, frame, and consign to a gallery, with the strict instructions that when it is hung, that the photo must face the wall.
