I bought this Tommy John 1964 Tommy John card that looks too good to be true. Other than centering it looks Mint.
I have another of these cards and the card I bought in question looks noticeably thinner. Here is the listing. https://www.ebay.com/itm/13429430035...p2047675.l2557 |

they sell cards on consignment and they actually have graders on-site. Bought from that seller before, if that card was counterfeit I believe they would have caught it.

Hmmm, who should I make a counterfeit of? 1952 Topps Mantle? 1955 Topps Clemente? 1963 Topps Rose? 1967 Topps Seaver? Wait, I got it! A 1964 Topps Tommy John!

Too be clear I wasn't accusing the seller of knowingly listing a counterfeit card.
Sometimes sellers do not know they are selling a counterfeit item. Last edited by JWBlue; 11-29-2022 at 03:37 PM. |

I think the obvious answer is, they have counterfeited just about everything, regardless of value. I would trust the look and feel of the card. If you think it's bad, I would send it back for a refund.

^^this^^ It could also be thinner from being pressed in a screwdown for years. I cracked out a PSA 7 Ted Williams that was really thin but real from being pressed.

It is my experience that some of the white stock cards are slightly thinner than the cream stock in 64.
It may also be screw down pressing. The card is authentic. |

I had a dealer show me some blazing gem mint 1964 Topps here at a show in Florida about a year ago…. he wasn’t selling them because he suspected they might not be real as they were very thin. On inspection the colors all looked great but no question they seemed thinner than any 1960s Topps cards I’d ever handled. Don’t remember if the backs were white or cream . This is just information to add to the thread….. and man those cards were about perfect on the corners and centering….. maybe too perfect?? He wasn’t selling and I wasn’t buying and we left it at that.

I bought a 1964 Mays-Cepeda Giant Gunners off of eBay a couple of years ago. Card looked nice in the photos but def felt thinner when I received it. I couldn't find the order on eBay and I don't remember the seller.
Maybe I'll get the micrometer out and check the thickness vs. others. Were there any other distribution channels for baseball cards in 1964? Magazines, cereal, etc??
