Default Show us your 1952 StarCal Decals

I've recently discovered the 1952 StarCal Decal set. They align well with my love of oddball cards. https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...al-decals-set/

Anyone else collect these? Have any cool advertising, promo materials? Let's see em'

I have 8 Type 2s. I'm waiting 4 Type 1s to be delivered.

I have all of the Cubs including the very large six player package. I have had to replace several over the years because I stored them stacked on top of each other and they would eventually stick to each other causing small areas of paper loss when separated. I finally put each one in a clear comic book protective sleeve, hopefully that solves that problem.

Cliff, mine are in mylar sleeves. No problems so far.

This was one of the tougher pieces for me to find for my Al Rosen collection:

2019 National.

Already had this one:

Here's a fun one I am glad I bought when I did:

And it isn't a Star Cal but it is an incredibly rare decal from the era:

Gotta slip in the Brown Bomber somewhere...

That's cool, I didn't know they made 6 player packs. Did they make one per team?

I don't know, the only other ones I have seen are the Yankees and I think the Indians. Theoretically they could have done it with the Tigers, Indians, Giants, Dodgers, White Sox, Cardinals, Yankees, Cubs, and Red Sox since each of those teams had at least six players in the set. After a quick search on WorthPoint I found the Red Sox and the Cardinals so they probably did make one for each of those nine teams. ETA, found the Yankees six player pack. ETA again, found the White Sox and Giants, that leaves the Dodgers, Tigers, and Indians to be confirmed. ETA again, they measure a whopping 8.75" x 18.75".

There is also a salesman sample book that includes both large and small stickers. Back in the early 80s two became available: one with a large Ted Williams sticker and the other one had Jackie Robinson. I ended up with the Robinson but traded it a few years later for some other cards for my collection.

I just found an REA listing for the salesman sample book from 2018.

I figured there would be at least ten of them, nine would be an odd number. Cubs, Yankees, Giants, White Sox, Cardinals, Red Sox, and a Browns-Phillies-Pirates combo are confirmed, Dodgers, Indians, Tigers need to be confirmed.

Meyercort Corp of Chicago made these and many other decals through the fifties. The original Meyercort Building is still standing (at least it was as of last fall and was last used as Masonic Lodge.

I picked up a couple of Billy Pierce Star Cals some years ago and decided to look into the origins of these things. I fell down a deep rabbit hole. I did a blog post about them which is still up even though I haven't updated the blog in awhile.

The Hollywood and music stars decals are almost as cool as the ballplayers.

Thanks Bob. I enjoyed that blog post. The photo of the detail kiosk was really interesting. I can just imagine walking into a department store and seeing that as kid in the 50s.

When I see graded Star-Cal decals, they're often graded as Authentic without a number grade.

My observation is that Do TPAs only grade them as authentic if they're in the original envelope. The only number grades that I've seen are where the decals are outside of their envelope.

Is that correct?

Beckett used to grade the envelopes. Not sure if they still do. I am not sure why these are so popular in the envelopes, I guess they look cool but you don't really know the condition of the decal.

I have never seen this Joe before and I now want one just about more than anything for my Louis collection. If you ever wish to move it or see another please let me know!

If anything thank you for letting me know about this.

My paranoia has always been a fear of damaging the decal while opening the envelope.

That and I’ve watched too much antiques roadshow. I’m always convinced that collectors in the future will only want them with the envelope on, and by removing the envelope the value will plummet.

Now that I have finished complementing Adam…

I have a collection of both MLB and celebrities, all are Mylar sleeved and had no issues with the dreaded stick that these are prone to. I love Star-cal.

As to the envelopes, I do have a peeve when I see them out and tend not to bid. In my mind the envelope is a frame and makes the look. I would mentally deduct at least half the value (to me) for a missing envelope.

Justin, everything I have is for sale or trade...at the right price

I definitely prefer the SC's in the envelopes. It is part of the charm of the item. I can understand why no # grades though: a lot of the ones in the envelopes got stuck to the envelopes over the decades and won't come out now.

Love the ad. Answers a question I have always had. I have the 7 single Cubs and the three 2 player ones. I didn't know there was a 6 player one also so another hunt is on for me. My question was whether I had missed a single Cub or a two player one since Hacker was not in the two player one. I thought I needed to find either a missing Cub or a two player one with Hacker and some other player. I also read the article and see there were some who were done in singles. So my question is answered. Final note - I have had these a long time and back in the day I had the Miksis and Jackson one's on the dresser mirror in my room. They were still there when my mother passed away in 1991 and I wish I had brought that dresser with me but, at the time, didn't have the space.
