Default SGC Grade A

Question-does SGC give out just an A if something needs slabbed real fast, or if they are too afraid to give it an actual grade as it could be trimmed, but they are not sure.

I have purchased two cards, and sent them in for actual grading. They came back A, and not the kind with the description. One card was sold, the current one I have I am actually keeping and could never tell if it was trimmed.

It is super clean on the front & back. I have not researched the card yet to see if it is actually cracked from a case. The card looks flawless to me.

Curious to anyone that has thoughts on this, and appreciate it! It will NOT be a card I sell, as I kicked my self in the butt for missing a Cy Young portrait that was similar to this in appearance.

The main question I have is SGC throwing A’s on nice cards vs giving them a grade and then it is too late to retract?

I believe under their new grading system, they provide a reason why they're giving an Authentic grade. Either trimming, recoloring etc.

"A" usually means that there is an issue with the card that SGC doesn't like. I had a 1956 Jackie Robinson with a spot of damage. It got an A. I also had a card that was trimmed. It got an "A" as well.

If you sent it in, there will usually be some text in your return invoice that will tell you why the grade. Like where mine says “cannot grade” for the Gretzky. It could also say “A” and then have a reason. Check that sheet if you still have it.

Ok thanks for the quick AND awesome answers.

I only ask about the A vs A with an answer because I got an A back with a Demmitt that was super disappointing and it was the old just give it an A instead of a reason. The paperwork is long gone, but the card I have now I will see if I can find.

Some people have had luck sending in the cert number to SCG help email address and getting a more clear answer from their grader files.
