I may be mistaken, but I think this U.S. Caramel Lefty Gomez card is his rookie. It was hiding in my collection of Yankees rookie cards.

First card was the 1929 Zeenut but first MLB card was that one.

That is an awesome card. You do not see cancelled R328 US Caramels very often.
Were these issued over multiple years? Grove was born in March of 1900, and his card mentions that he was 33, so I assume that it was produced sometime after March 6 of 1900. Many of the cards make reference to career numbers of a player that includes their 1932 seasons. For example, Gomez's card states that he had pitched in 92 games, winning 47 and losing 21, which corresponds with his career stats after the 1932 season. Other players’ cards make reference to winning the 1932 MVP or playing in the 1932 World Series. So, I guess that the cards could have been made at the very end of the year, but that would be very unusual timing for a set and dies not explain the discrepancies in the listed ages of some of the players. I thought that I remember reading a thread about the dating of this issue, but I cannot seem to find it. Last edited by Baseball Rarities; 06-06-2022 at 10:13 PM. |

Kevin, the 1932 date on the set is demonstrably incorrect. It is a 1933 set.
![]() The biography back states that Lefty won the 1932 bating title and that he is 36 years old. Lefty was born March 4, 1897. To be 36 years old as of the time the bio was written, the card had to be issued no earlier than March 4, 1933. There are other examples as well, like Grove and Gomez. It would also make the 1933 Goudey Gomez into a RC as well. I brought this to the Standard Catalog people a long time ago but it never got traction, apparently, because the TPGs still mislabel them.

On the other hand, there are also some ages that correspond to 1932, but those biographies could have very well been written in 1932 and not published until 1933. Very convoluted. It would be great to see some sort of period advertising for the set. Last edited by Baseball Rarities; 06-06-2022 at 09:31 PM. |

Val - Cronin's card states that he was now manager of the Senators. I know that his first year managing the Senators was 1933 when he took over for Walter Johnson. Do you know when he was actually named the manager or when Johnson was fired?

Also Eddie Collins is identified as part owner of the Red Sox, and that his age is 45 years old. As far as I can tell, he became part owner at the time he was named vice president and general manager on February 25th, 1933. He would have been 46 years old on May 2nd, 1933. That issue date of early spring is looking pretty solid.

Always willing to bring things down a couple of notches when it comes to visual examples. Here is a rough Ruffing and a leftover O'Doul.

Kevin, offhand, I don't know either of these specific dates. I just now took a quick look at Hank Thomas' wonderful bio of his grandfather and found this: "At a testimonial banquet before 700 Washingtonians at the Shoreham Hotel on November 30, 1932, Walter Johnson bade farewell to the Nationals more than a quarter-century after joining the team." I would think exact dates could be found with greater research.

So, the earliest that the Collins card could have been produced looks to be Feb 25, 1933. |

I seem to remember a post many years ago about the year of issue for this set. I seem to remember that it should be the 1933 U.S. Caramel set. I will try to search the forum in a few minutes to see if I can find it.
