Default April Pickups

There was a mask-free show out here today (which was overwhelmingly populated by dealers selling new stuff, unfortunately) and I was able to go on a negotiation rampage with some vintage guys. Every single graded card was just so stupidly overpriced that it was a complete no-go. My favorite was the 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 3 Rookie Card for 4K...four frickin' thousand for a nasty looking card. Yowza!!!! Guess that makes my PSA 4 worth 6K now.

So I hit the dealers with ungraded stuff and worked out deals for some tremendously sweet cards!!!

Quickly crunching the numbers to determine if the price of an ungraded card is a good deal, based on what its value would be if it came back from a TPG at the grade it ‘unquestionably deserves.’

And sometimes, no matter what it costs, you gotta pick up a freaky card, because you may never see another one like it! (There's easily removable gum/wax residue on the front, so 'Broadway Joe' was definitely issued in a pack!)

Some of these guys are available for trade. Gimme a shout.

Default qualifier

Loved the MC "qualifier discount" on this Minoso, since it only relates to the back.

Love the miscut backs, where the front is totally fine. Nice pickup!

Darren,

Those are great cards! I find that the only way to go now is raw. Vintage and modern graded cards are overvalued right now in my opinion.

The nice (but misguided) guy I bought most of those cards from always has maniacal prices, and you can basically see 99.9% of the same cards in his cases at each and every show he does, because none of his waaaay overpriced stars ever sell. Unfortunately, the collecting world has changed and what used to be the top is now the bottom, so I decided to dig in a bit and realized he still had yesteryear prices on everything (some of the stickers were so brittle from being affixed for so long that they fell off!). Still high, but reasonable enough after some negotiation to make it worthwhile to grab a bunch. Alas, now I sure wish I had bought even more, because by the time the next show rolls around, he will certainly 'new sticker' everything to return his pricing back to the stratosphere where he's most comfortable.

Great pickups all...

I bought my first ever postcard. I missed out on this one in the BST recently and was really transfixed by the photo...and was looking for one ever since. I'll be sending it in to SGC once I get it in my hands. Don't care about grade, just love this picture...

Picked up this '48 Bowman Schoendienst a week or so ago. This was the last card I needed to complete my '48 Bowman set (all graded at least 5). Fortunately, I started that adventure close to seven years ago, and I picked up all but three cards (with Red being the most prominent of the three) prior to the 2020 card boom.

On a related note, this is the first CSG slab in my collection, and I have to say that I'm relatively pleased with the product.

Cheers,

Mark...are you going to re-slab that with their new design? I have to admit, their new looking slab is pretty sweet. Great card!

Starting to now get obsessed with these 1953-55 Dormand postcards, the photography is amazing. Up to 6 now, and picked up the other Mantle variation...

Also picked up the famous Gil Hodges. A quick search here on net54 and I learned about the discovery of 700 cards that rendered at one time one of the rarest post war items to everyone now able to finish off their sets. Cool story, and I am sure my new Gil is from that find.

Couple more pick ups...

My Gil and 2 Mick's will all be subbed to SGC...lovin' these!

Great looking card, Ian.
Minoso's have really taken off since his HOF induction. Personally, I thought things would cool off not long after but that certainly isn't the case based on what I have seen.

Here's one that just arrived in the mail.
A signed '57 pafko copy?

I was told it was done at shows in the 70s. For autograph guests.
Can anybody confirm that?

John,

I'm not planning on it at the moment. As things stand now, the Schoendienst and the Feller are the only cards that are not in PSA slabs (Feller is in an SGC slab). If I were ever to consider selling the set, I might consider putting the two "outliers" in PSA slabs. But for now, I'm ok with them in their current states.

Picked this up from LOTG. I decided I could live with it being a little trimmed because I could never afford one that looked this nice otherwise. Besides, it seems like the cards in this set are very often miscut or varying in size so hard to say if it was trimmed or just cut this way originally. Either way, I was happy to get it.

I don't mind ponying up for rare cards (okay, I mind a little), but it hurts to do so for expensive but very common cards. Should have stopped passing on Jackie's for the last 10 years. Sometimes its cheaper to just buy it for my set now and not cry. With the two stocks and two variations of the logo, I believe I actually will need 4 of this card for my set eventually. I hope the A grade is because of the erasure mark and I didn't fail to notice something.

The Pakfo hasn't changed in price much for a long time. I'll never understand why it's expensive in low grade (over 10x other common players in series 1), but I've been building series 1 in both black and red back versions. I already had the red, so nice to cross this one off. It's probably the most expensive card of the run (except the wrong back Page/Sain errors if one counts them).

Mickey I got lower than I thought, it's Poor but it's Mickey and was only $70. Leaves me at 1 card to go for the 1959 basic set, Bob Gibson. I still need a grey back Maris and one of the Spahn variants for my master.

Default 1976 Uncut Team Checklist

I just picked up this nice, unchecked and uncut 1976 Topps Baseball Team Set send-in. This finishes my run of 74 to 82 Topps Send ins.

If I am ever fortunate to come across an uncut panel of the 73 Team checklists, I have seen two of them so far, I will gladly add that to the run. Until then, another checkbox checked.

And you too with the 58!

It just occurred to me that Topps chose red as Kaline's background color EVERY time in the 50s (54, 55, 58 and 59)!

Picked up at Prestige Auction. This is the 2nd card in a crazy 10 card run that I may never finish. This is card #6, I'll post #4 which I own, for reference.
From the auction description:

Twelve players are depicted in the JCM 135 set, with each player appearing in between five and ten sequentially numbered cards depicting play action. Shigeo Nagashima has ten cards in the set. When placed side by side, Mr. Giants is seen running for a ground ball, fielding it, and then throwing it. These cards are rarely seen, and we know of only one complete set of the ten cards. The Japanese Baseball Card Checklist & Price Guide, Vintage Edition 2.1 has assigned a scarcity factor of R5 to the JCM 135 set, signifying that five or fewer examples of each card are known.

Not a new pick up, but freshly graded yesterday. I've been having fun going through my 52 to 56 Topps and Bowmans and grading my HOFers. I've had A's to 6's...but really don't care. Just love the look and fun to do.

This was one of the 6 just completed...I thought for sure it would be a 2.5 or 3...no creases or wrinkles...a little tilted and corners certainly soft...but a 1.5? Oh well...

I've shared this card before, I got a lot of 55 Bowmans a year or so ago that the kid who owned them decided to record their uniform number on the front of the card. Adds character... I did finish the set (started with about 100 from the initial lot) with EXish cards so the goal now will be to slowly replace the marked cards, although I will keep them whole as they are cool to have. I had no idea what this Mantle would grade out to with the ink, no idea how SGC handles ink. Turns out, I got an A for "Evidence of Trimming". Which is funny...I got these directly from the guy who purchased them from the older man who opened them in packs. So...and besides...have you ever seen a stack of 55 Bowman? Not one card is the same size! Again, oh well...

The rest graded out as expected...

Default New to me

Picked these up yesterday at a local card show (first local one I've been to in years). Not much vintage, but I couldn't pass up a reasonably centered 69 Mantle for $300. Many of you know, even remotely well centered versions of this card are not common. The Brett was just a really nice version of an 8. Happy to have both.
