Hi
I have no Honus Wagners. Not sure if I will get when yet. Just starting to research it for future planning But if I do what would be the first card to go after (forgetting the T206 Well out of my league) What are the Top Wagner Cards out there after the T206? In order would you rate them?

1914 or 1915 Cracker Jack. After the t206 set, the most iconic set with a Wagner card. E95 is my favorite of the caramel cards.

Get a portrait card. The t206 wagner is the most famous and iconic ward in the hobby, so get as close as you can. W600; Rose Co PC (a very nice one just sold in Heritage); M116 Blue and Pastel; E90-2 and E104-II (very rare); e103; D322 Tip Top

My favorites are the M101-4/5 Wagners, but I really like photographic images and do not like lithographic cards. I think they are also the best buy of any Wagners.

If you're only going to get one, as Ryan said, I'd lean toward a portrait as well. Personally, I like the D322 the most as it is IMO the closest to the T206. Same orientation, same color scheme, just a little large.

Yes, the E107 and W600 Street Clothes are hands down the best Wagner cards after T206. However, those suckers are so rare and expensive that I did not mention them.

Finding and then affording a Breisch Williams Wagner represents two different tall orders. I like the M101-4 and E95 Wagner’s and you can both find and afford them.

selection over load.
A lot to think about thinks for those that shared. I do like the portraits and currently towards them. Not sure which ones but the Rose Post Cards are really nice. I also saw the 1911 M110 Sporting News Cabinet Card and those have appeal in both the eye appeal and the Rarity. Please keep making suggestions the more informed the better the decision Thanks

You could also get the 48 Leaf depicting Honus putting a chaw in his mouth, I could never figure out why they would choose this image, I guess that's a portrait of sorts...

The National Copper Plate and M101-1 Sporting News are the first and best Wagners besides the T206. Both are rare. My favorite issues, with the great portraits and the bio on the back. Would rank those at the top along with the W600s and then the E107.

Budget matters and I’ve always liked the game cards (National Game and Tom Barker) as they don’t tend to break the bank.

or the 1914 Polo grounds Game. The advantage to the playing card issues is that they were made with rounded corners and you can pick one up in great condition for a small amount compared to all the others that have been mentioned (except for the Leaf of him as a coach). I much prefer the picture on the Polo Grounds to the one on the National Game. 1914 Polo Grounds- HONUS WAGNER - BST - 832.jpg Some folks don't consider the playing cards actual Baseball Cards, but they were produced during Honus's career and that makes it good for me.

I have always liked this 1908 PC770 American League Publishing Company postcard which features his classic Horner portrait along with a great batting pose. Nice that it was issued at the height of his career in 1908 - probably his greatest season. It is also very rare. I am only aware of three examples.

Hey, all!
Thanks for posting that ALPC of Wagner, Kev. That my be my favorite since it shows photographic images of a portrait as well as batting. I'm a big fan of B&W photo-based pieces and that one has the best of both worlds! Good to see you too, Jeff and Tony! |

I would vote for one of the cards that features the famous Carl Horner portrait, preferably in black and white. It is interesting how some of these portrait cards are orientated to the right while others reversed the negative and show him looking to the left.

I always knew there were amazing Wagner Cards Out there. But I amazed to learn of some of the rare cards and sets that I never knew existed.
Lot's to think about and I have my eye on one. If the Deal works out I will share it with the team and of course always on the hunt for more at some point in the future.

Really awesome card, congrats. Slight bonus is the SGC label going with Honus instead of Hans. E93 and E98 are the same image but the former is usually labeled Honus and the latter is usually labeled Hans.
(Although I'm a softy for E93, my favorite Honus cards have to be E95 and E90-2.) |
