He passed away recently at 85. Quite a life not only as a pitcher but also as the founder of "Mudcat and the Kittens," a song and dance group that played at nightclubs during the off-season.
Never knew how he got his nickname until I read his obit. It states that Mudcat was the informal name given to large catfish found in muddy streams. At an Indians tryout camp in 1954 his teammates started calling him Mississippi Mudcat. He told them he was born and raised in Florida. But they didn't care. The name stuck. And he had no problem with it. It served him well, he said. A civil rights advocate also. Thank you, Mudcat, and RIP. |

First Black pitcher to win 20 in the AL, and the first pitcher ever for the Expos/Nationals.
His 59 Topps may be the only card to call him Mudcat?

Mudcat used to announce tribe games on the radio. When he was in the booth, he would have a fishing net to try and catch foul balls. A very interesting fellow.

By the way, the NYT obit on Mudcat referenced this 1968 SI Frank DeFord piece on Mudcat. If you haven't read the late DeFord you should treat yourself to one of his many books. The guy could plain write. Yes, I'm jealous! I haven't read this piece yet BUT I am looking forward to it. I hope this cut and paste works. Enjoy. |

The Indians held a tribute to Mudcat during their Saturday game at the Prog. Below is a pic from an earlier ceremony honoring him at the ballpark. He is a beloved figure in Cleveland sports history.

Is it my imagination, or does Brooks Lawrence seem to be enjoying his impersonation of Mudcat a little too much?

I liked him better in black and gold! Rest In Peace Mudcat. A total class act and a life well lived.
