Default September Pick Ups

I like to start off monthly pick up threads slow, so they have the chance to build up momentum. Here is a nice looking card from the BST $1 starting bid auction section offered by LuckyLarry that just came in...a 1929 R316 Kashin of Mark Koenig.

Picked this up in Leland’s. I didn’t have any M116s but this card just seemed so amazing. Some of the cards in this set are really beautiful. No idea why it’s a 4.5, PSA is really nuts sometimes. Would have been an 8 a decade ago.

Buzz Arlett. In my opinion he is (121 MLB Games - 469 PA) the player with the shortest MLB career who one could make a fair argument for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Cool card. Funnily enough I also have one of these in an SGC 4.5.

Happy to add this combo to my T206 off back collection. I'm at 689 total cards with very few dupes.

I knew someone would come along and obliterate my R316 Koenig pickup...congrats Phil on such unworldly E94 cards. Paul's M116 Collins is pretty special too.

Default REA e94's

Well was able to get at least one e94 from the REA auction. Or, as it's been called bloodbath. But did get this Matty as well.

Our forum members look like they are having a great month picking wonderful cards up.

This was a National pick up that didn't make the thread show yet...

From the last Huggins & Scott auction. Glad to come away with one card I needed, some of the prices were pretty strong, I presume because of the front/back combinations. A PSA 8 #83 Paul Waner with a blue back went for $7800 while a PSA 8 with a green back went for $1050 in April.

I do collect front variations (e.g., Greenberg/Greenburg) but not the same front with different back color and year combinations. It's hard enough getting one of each card!

I’m not a graded card collector but always wanted this particular Mantle. To my untrained eye though, this card seems much better than its grade. Any idea what brought it down?

Nice card!! What's with the ink or print dot on right side back?? Perhaps that's the deduction in grade?

That's kind of what I wondered....if that dot was substantial enough to bring it down.

Is that a print dot or maybe a piece of the gasket overlapping the card, which sometimes happens with SGC?

Same color, but it does appear to be just a print dot.

I love the 56 card. Yours is very nice for the grade. Top to bottom centering and maybe some surface wear & touched corners brought it down a bit. Who knows. Yours has great eye appeal. Congrats on the purchase!!

Andy,
That’s an awesome Rube notebook cover! I really love the look of those and that one of the most eye catching ones I’ve ever seen. I’m going to have to break down and get one at some point. Throat would look great on the shelf.
Congrats,
Bob

Great looking Mays! So hard to find without the print marks, fisheyes, etc. Congratulations.

Thanks Phil and Brian.

Yeah, Matty had definitely declined when this card was issued. Sure glad they used the photo they did. Made for an instant classic.

That's a clean Mays! Proof that one doesn't need to pay the higher grade "premium" to get a beautiful card. I'll bet that this looks better than a lot in higher grades. Congrats!
