Has anyone around come close to doing this?
I know Al R. has baseball covered, but covering the '48-'89 sets in all four major sports is a whole new level of craziness. |

I knew someone that had all of the sets from that time period for baseball, football, and basketball; he even had the 49 Bowman PCL set which is very hard to come by. His name was Wes and he was responsible for getting me involved in the more serious side of the hobby back in 1975 by hiring me to help at his table at the monthly card meetings (shows) and at the conventions. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 83 and I don't know what his sons did with his collection.

Is hockey the 4th one ? ( only kidding I am a Blues fan as well as a Cardinals fan). It would have to be someone with a lot of room
![]() And would the run cover all manufacturers of all sets in those 4 sports during that period ? If not, what would be the criteria for inclusion in the list ( bet there would be some 'discussion' about that too ![]() Last edited by ALR-bishop; 02-19-2021 at 08:42 AM. |

![]() Baseball: '48 Leaf, '48-'55 Bowman, '52-'89 Topps, '63 Fleer, '81-'89 Donruss and Fleer, '88-'89 Score, '89 Bowman and Upper Deck Basketball: '48 Bow, '57 Topps, '61 Fleer, '69-'81 Topps, '86-'89 Fleer Football: '48 Bow, '48-'49 Leaf, '50-'55 Bow, '56-'89 Topps, '89 Score Hockey: '51-'55 Parkhurst, '54 Topps, '57-'63 Park, '57-'89 Topps All traded/supplemental sets from the '70s and '80 would included. I did not use OPC hockey, because that seemed like doubling up way too much. Naturally those could be included too. Ran a quick calculation of what it could cost to build this at current prices. Even with the insane year things have had, the total is still on planet earth if you use reasonable grades. Here's the summary. Assuming grade 3 for '50s-'60s, grade 5 for '70s, and grade 7 for '80s. With all the huge cards graded and giving more and more slack for raw as the price really drops: Baseball $405,180 Basket $97,650 Football $47,930 Hockey $78,870 Total $629,630 Last edited by cardsagain74; 02-19-2021 at 02:31 PM. |

Thanks guys.
I should have included Philadelphia football. Knew there'd be at least one obvious one that was left out ![]() It was an interesting quick exercise to gain some more info about the areas that I knew the least about (older football and hockey). Did not realize that Namath's rookie would be the most expensive football card of that entire run, or that Parkhurst hockey cards were in such short supply. Edit: I knew something looked off there. Accidentally used grade 5 for the Namath check. Scratch that. The good news for football collectors is you can knock 2500 off the football total there Last edited by cardsagain74; 02-19-2021 at 05:27 PM. |
