2020 Card Collecting Goals: How Did you Do?

I thought half way through December might be a good time to see how everyone did in adding to their card collections in 2020. For me, I have specific goals that I try to meet. I'll start a new thread in a week or so asking about your 2021 goals, but this thread is for how you've done in 2020. Here were my 2020 card collecting goals and how I did:

1) Pick up at least 4 more C46 Baltimore players
- Thanks to a fellow N54er, I actually picked up all six I still needed. Goal met!
2) Add at least 3 more T206 Baltimore front/back combos
- Thru the year I've been able to pick up five, for a total of 55 now. Goal met!
3) Add at least one N172 Baltimore player/pose
- I've been able to add two that I needed this year. Goal met!
4) Add at least one N173 Baltimore cabinet card.
- Couldn't do it, never saw one for sale this year. Goal NOT met
5) Add at least 4 SGC-graded T201's (working on a set while I wait for Baltimore items to appear at auction.
- I was able to add three Goal partially met

Overall, not too bad. It was actually a better year than most for me. I'm interested in hearing how you did in 2020!

1) Pick up an E93 Cobb - nope...I think i'm at four or five years running that I've had this on my goals and still haven't picked one up.
2) Add another E92 red croft, menagerie, or prizefighter - Yup - E92 Red Croft Bender
3) Add 2 more cards to the E92 Nadja Set - nope - added Evers thanks to a board member and relinquished another
4) Add another back to my E/T Young backrun (preferable a T216) - yup, but just an E101
5) Finish my Davis backrun (need cocoa and maybe black candy) - nope
6) Add another Wagner, Cobb, and maybe Ruth - Yup - D322 Wagner, T206 Cobb Red portrait

I think I did pretty good for the year. In addition to these I also picked up a bunch of stuff that was not really a priority, but have always had in the back of my head that I wanted to get at some point (E95 Plank, T206 Speaker, T222 Alexander, etc).

My goals were simple:
1 Finish my T59 set. Nope still need 3, but I did finish my T87 set by sheer luck and a few set backs with the A series.
2 Pick up some prewar HOFers. Added a Paul Waner r315, and upgraded my 41 Play Ball Arky Vaughan. Also picked up a lot of Exhibit cards of HOFers.
3 Don't add any new sets to the list of collections. Nope added about 6 or 10 more sets to the list.

Built a list of 300 beginning of the year and just counted the X marks. 141/300 including:

Cobb: T206 Green portrait, 33 Sport Kings, E-121 batting

14CJ: Johnson, Lajoie, Clarke, Collins, Plank.

1908 Rose Postcard Doolan & Schlei, 1913 Schultz Wajo Postcard, 1911 M131 Baltimore Newsboy Bescher.

T206 Piedmont - Speaker, McGraw, Dahlen, Walsh

30 assorted E98's, 11 hi Grade E94's, Assorted E-121's including Sisler, Johnson, Hornsby, Alexander, & Wood.

1929 Kashin including Ruth & Gehrig. A dozen 1933 Goudeys including Gehrig, Ott, Hubbell, Foxx.

Half a dozen 1939 Play Balls, 1941 Play Ball DiMaggio, 1948 Bowman Musial & Feller. 1951 Bowmans, 1953 Bowmans.

1953 Topps Mantle, Robinson, Paige. 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams.

Topps, HOFers in years 56, 57, 61, 63, 64, 66, 67, 69, 71, 71 Highlights, to round out the rest.

This place is a bad influence on an impressionable boy like myself, needless to say, the Kitchen remodel will have to wait until next year...

Add to my Dots Miller big glove run...FAIL! PLS HELP ME!!!!!

Add to my babe ruth collection...SUCCESS...I think I added around 15 period ruth cards to my collection

Add Cobbs to my cobb collection...SUCCESS...I added e93/e95/dietsche/T205/T206/1907 Team card.

Overall I spent more $$$$$ on acquisitions this year than any year in my life!

I had some general goals at the beginning of 2020, however in March, I lost my job to Covid/the economy. Remember how uncertain that time was? I got scared I'd have trouble finding a job, so I sold my whole (though rather small) collection. Got lucky enough to find a new position in August before I had to burn through my sales or savings. So I chose to purchase a limited number of higher value cards I otherwise probably couldn't afford. Ended up with some RCs I'm very happy with.

1951 Bowman Mantle PSA 4.5
1984 Star Co Jordan BGS 8
1979 OPC Gretzky PSA 7

So pretty successful overall I guess, but there are sure a few sold cards I'd love to have back.

Just to get back into collecting, significantly condense the collection down, reconnect with hobby friends and have fun.

Checked all the boxes.

1st - For 2020 I wanted to still take a few hits off my T205 set needs and was more than happy to land some cards very early in the coved era before prices got nuts. Scored a Welhelm, Grant, Minor league card and a Chase extended I needed plus some commons. After 2021 I should only have 1 big card and then it's working on filling in commons and upgrades as they present themselves. (Accomplished)

2nd - wanted to add some thing or two to my pre-war Cubs Hof collections - this goal as easy to do there is a lot of options to choose from. (Accomplished)

3rd - I have a number of 70s topps baseball low end sets from my childhood that I alway said I would like to finish. (I never seem to to happen, 2021 Will be the year, so I will be in the market for some common lots.)

4th - for no reason I'm putting together a low end set of 1959 topps football in VG-EX.about halfway there but made good progress. (Accomplished, both HOFs and commoms) but would like to buy or trade

5th - Always looking for prewar or vintage Omaha baseball anything. Harder then it seems because other Omaha collectors always to have deeper pockets than myself. (Accomplished, 1 nice program and 2 personal photos of players in vintage uniforms)

1)Upgraded my Clemente Topps collection.2)Upgraded most of my t206 New York Giants team set.3) Added several Ed Abbaticchio’s to my collection! The only good thing about this year was my early in the year pickups!

I started 2020 owning only modern cards.

I now have a 52 Topps Mantle, 48 Leaf Jackie and (7) Cobb’s.

Guess I met some goals I never made.

This was a slow year. Most of my budget went to a new house, but I did pick up a couple nice cards.

1. 1914 Cracker Jack Honus Wagner PSA 3. Met my goal of picking up one new Wagner card. Looking for E95 or E98 next year.

2. T205 Kleinow PSA 5. This was an upgrade to my t205 set. I have 5 more cards that I would like to upgrade to PSA/SGC 5 or better. Hope to find at least one more next year.

I had a decent 2020 collecting year with modest collecting goals.

I achieved the ultimate Collecting goal in 2020 which is I will no longer Directly do Business with SGC for future submissions. I encourage others to try and reach for this ultimate collecting goal. LOL

I'm sure you'll be much more satisfied with PSA! The reality is TPG'ers are really only necessary if you're selling. There are plenty of ways to protect cards!

I didn't have any specific goals at the beginning of the year, but did pick up the other 3 Goudey Ruths to go with the 144 I've had for years, a 14 CJ Jackson on the board here, and an 85 Star 101 Jordan from another member's AH, Birmingham.
